Book excerpt: In 1964, I had the opportunity to share several luncheons with the Polish inventor of a chemical that had an unusual configuration and that targeted the site of action in the human brain, the limbic system. This chemical, which was stolen by Hitler’s men and used as a secret weapon at the start of World War II while the supply lasted, was an antifear drug. This started a chase to find, kill, or capture the inventor at a time when he lost his assistant and fiancée, the daughter of a prominent Jewish family, to capture by the Nazis while she was trying to find them in the Warsaw ghetto. A Swiss national, and therefore a neutral person, helped him with the search as a representative of a large Swiss pharmaceutical research company, but he never saw his lost love again. While searching the Warsaw ghetto, he was able to help the inhabitants and witness their prosecution as well as aid them with pharmaceuticals. I promised to tell the world his story someday.

Wayne Clough, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution born in the South. Soon after retiring from the Smithsonian, Clough decided to see what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia, where he had spent most of his childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The investigations that followed, which began as something of a quixotic scavenger hunt, expanded as Clough discovered that the collections had many more objects and documents from South Georgia than he had imagined. Book excerpt: In 1956, in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, a group of Wari’ Indians had their first peaceful contact with whites: Protestant missionaries and officers from the national Indian Protection Service. On returning to their villages, the Wari’ announced, “We touched their bodies!” Meanwhile the whites reported to their own people that “the region’s most warlike tribe has entered the pacification phase!” Initially published in Brazil, Strange Enemies is an ethnographic narrative of the first encounters between these peoples with radically different worldviews. During the 1940s and 1950s, white rubber tappers invading the Wari’ lands raided the native villages, shooting and killing their victims as they slept. These massacres prompted the Wari’ to initiate a period of intense retaliatory warfare. The national government and religious organizations subsequently intervened, seeking to “pacify” the Indians. Aparecida Vilaça was able to interview both Wari’ and non-Wari’ participants in these encounters, and here she shares their firsthand narratives of the dramatic events. Taking the Wari’ perspective as its starting point, Strange Enemies combines a detailed examination of these cross-cultural encounters with analyses of classic ethnological themes such as kinship, shamanism, cannibalism, warfare, and mythology.
