Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Early American History For children of tender years, the material must not only be concrete and colorful, but it must also be presented in language so simple that the thought can be easily grasped. If the author has succeeded in this twofold purpose, Stories of Early American History should fulfil its mission. It is hoped that the fine illustrations and the attractive typographical features of the book will help in bringing vividly before the child's mind the events recounted in the text. Another aid in making the stories real will, it is intended, be found in Some Things to Think About. These and similar questions, which will suggest themselves to the teacher, will doubtless serve to help the child in Vitalizing the life of the past and connecting it with the present and his own life. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge my deep obliga tion to Mr. Forrest Morgan, of the Watkinson Library, Hart ford, and to Miss Elizabeth P. Peck, of the Hartford Public High School, both of whom have read the manuscript and have made many valuable suggestions and criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early American History: For Young Americans The other, his head filled with a jumbled mass of dates, names, and figures, at the end of his school days had closed his history with a sigh of relief, and had sought no farther, glad to think that no one thereafter could make him pursue so dry 9. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Later American History This book, like Stories of Early American History, follows somewhat closely the course of study prepared by the Committee of Eight, the present volume covering the topics outlined for Grade V, while the earlier one includes the material suggested for Grade IV. It was the plan of that committee to take up in these grades, largely in a biographical way, a great part Of the essential facts Of American history; and with this plan the author, who was a member of that committee, was in hearty accord. This method, it is believed, serves a double purpose. In the first place, it is the best possible way Of laying the foundation for the later and more detailed study Of United States history in the higher grammar grades by those pupils who are to continue in school; and in the second, it gives to that large number Of pupils who will leave school before the end of the Sixth grade - which is at least half Of all the boys and girls in the schools of the country - some acquaintance with the leading men and prominent events of American history. It is without doubt a great mistake to allow half of the pupils to go out from our public schools with almost no knowledge of the moral and material forces which have made this nation what it is to-day. It is an injustice to the young people themselves; it is also an injury to their country, the vigor of whose life will depend much upon their intelligent and patriotic support. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America First: One Hundred Stories From Our Own History When children advance beyond the nursery age, no story is so wonderful as a true story. Fiction to them is never as appealing as fact. I have often been faced with the inquiry: whether or not a story is a true one. The look of gratification, when told that "it actually happened," was most satisfying to me as a story-teller. The nearer a story is to the life and traditions of the child, the more eagerly it is attended. True stories about our own people, about our neighbors and friends, and about our own country at large, are more interesting than true stories of remote places and people. We naturally arc interested in our own affairs, and the nearer they are to us the greater the interest we feel. That history is just a long, thrilling story of the trials and triumphs of pioneers and patriots is well known to those who have had to do with the teaching of history to youthful minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in American History The author of this book has endeavored to meet the demand for a simple history of America, suitable for children of ten to twelve years of age, many of whom study no other text on the subject. In order to present a book of the most value the narrative treats of men who influence has been controlling in the destiny of the nation, but does not make of the their lives a series of hero stories. The facts of their lives and incidents of their careers are presented in sufficient fullness to reveal their personal traits and aid a pupil to understand their contributions to the current of events. The facts that are presented in the text are those which appear most important for child to know. It is sincerely hoped that the style of the narrative is simple enough for pupils of the fourth or fifth grade to read with ease and attractive enough for them to read with pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Early American History Experience and observation have shown that interest must be awakened in the early history of our country, or pupils will have a distaste for history in general; and that, if the early history of America, which is our real history, be understood and appreciated, no difficulty will arise in studying the later development of the country. A pupil who has rightly learned American history has laid a foundation for good reading and has acquired an interest in the history of other nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of American History IN writing this book, no attempt has been made to deal especially with the causal aspects of history. They belong to a later phase of the learner's growth. The earlier stage, for which this book is designed, Obtains its ideas of the past most naturally from the pictorial side; that is, from those external features of events which can best be presented through pictures, descriptions, and illustrative stories put together in chronological sequence. The aim of the author has been to select those interest ing and colorful facts identified more or less closely with the lives of strong and masterful men who were the leaders of great movements and the centres of important situations; and then, with the teacher's co - Operation, to interpret the material thus selected in such a way as to appeal to the imagination, and through the imagination to the heart and will of the child. Thus will he be helped to reconstruct the past - to people it with vigorous flesh-and-blood men and women, thinking, feeling, willing, and acting verv much like the men and women about him. He will, so far as his imagination allows, stand by the side of great leaders, feeling the impulse of their ideals and aspirations, sharing in their achievements, and learning from their successes and failures something of use in his own life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History My purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduction for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the success of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. With the hope of making the task of the teacher lighter, the chapters have been made short and an abundance of marginal headings has been introduced. On the basis of these headings complete outlines can be made by the pupils, which, when studied under the chapter headings, will give the pupil good topical grasp of the subject.
