Book excerpt: The use of social sterotypes as a basis for judgments and behavioral decisions has been a major focus of social psychological theory and research since the field began. Although motivational and cognitive influences on stereotyping have been considered, these two general types of influence have rarely been conceptually integrated within a common theoretical framework. Nevertheless, almost every area of theoretical and empirical concern in social cognition--areas such as the interpretation of new information, memory and retrieval processes, impression formation, the use of heuristic vs. analytic processing strategies, the role of affect in information processing, and self-esteem maintenance--has implications for this important social phenomenon. This volume's target article brings together the research of Galen Bodenhausen, Neil Macrae, and others within a theoretical framework that accounts for the processes that underlie both the activation of stereotypes and attempts to suppress their influence. They consider several stages of processing, including: *the categorization of a stimulus person; *the influence of this categorization on the interpretation of information about the stimulus person; and *the social judgments and behavioral decisions that are ultimately made. The stereotype activation and suppression mechanisms that the target article authors consider operate at all of these stages. Their conceptualization provides a framework within which the interrelatedness of processing at these stages can be understood. The 11th in the series, this volume includes companion articles that help to refine and extend the target article's conceptualization and make important theoretical contributions in their own right. They are written by prominent researchers in cognitive and social psychology, many of whom are active contributors to research and theory on stereotyping. They address the following topics: * the role of power and control in stereotype-based information processing; * the influence of prejudice; * self-regulatory processes; * social categorization; * the correction processes that result from perceptions of bias; and * the conceptualization of stereotypes themselves.

In several studies, Steele and his colleagues took a close look at the influence that negative stereotypes can have on individuals in performance-related situations. As a reaction to the initial concept, the research also extended to other phenomena related to stereotype threat, such as the influence of positive stereotypes in performance-related situations. However, this investigation of the other side of stereotype threat and further studies that have been done regarding stereotype threat in general resulted in contradicting findings. My thesis presents a focused review of the available literature first. This is done to provide a basis for the conceptual framework Shih and colleagues proposed (Shih, Ambady, Richeson, Fujita & Gray, 2002). Their work integrates the conflicting findings and suggests two possible factors that might regulate the effects that positive and negative stereotypes have on people: selfrelevance and the manner of stereotype activation. In my study, I tested this framework in replicating and critically evaluating the study Shih et al. (2002) have conducted. The results and implications for future research are presented.

Book excerpt: The present research explored whether inhibitory mechanisms derived from latent inhibition (LI) can interfere with stereotype expression. In particular, five studies explored whether irrelevant pre-exposure to attractive and unattractive individuals influenced selective attention mechanisms to subsequently guide attention away from stimulus features related to attractiveness. Inherent in this logic is the notion that if attention is guided away from stimulus features related to attractiveness, biased interpretations and discriminatory responses resulting from the activation of evaluations and stereotype content associated with attractiveness may be circumvented. Study 5 explored this issue using a modified evaluative priming procedure that included stereotype and non-stereotype traits as target words. LI interfered with the automatic activation of evaluations under these stimulus conditions. This finding suggests, therefore, that the failure to observe a moderating effect of LI on explicit personality judgments may have been caused by specific processes evoked during the person perception task. Findings are discussed in terms of how chronic cognitive associations pertaining to stereotypes interact with attentional mechanisms in social judgment processes. Study 1 demonstrated LI using the attractiveness of perceived individuals as the target stimulus. Participants who had experienced irrelevant pre-exposure to attractive and unattractive individuals had more difficulty subsequently learning a contingency based on attractiveness than participants who had no such pre-exposure. Study 2 revealed that irrelevant pre-exposure to attractive and unattractive individuals subsequently interferes with automatic activation of evaluations on the basis of attractiveness when indexed by an evaluative priming procedure. Studies 3 and 4, however, revealed that irrelevant pre-exposure to attractive and unattractive individuals failed to moderate the influence of attractiveness on explicit personality judgments. One possible reason for this disparity in effects is that processes evoked by the person perception task rendered attractiveness very salient, and this salience may call attention back to this construct even when LI has guided attention away from it. It was also possible, however, that the stimulus conditions created by the presentation of stereotype target traits in combination with clearly attractive and unattractive faces was responsible for the failure of LI to mitigate stereotype expression.
