Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the theory, analysis and design of microwave stepped-frequency radar sensors. Stepped-frequency radar sensors are attractive for various sensing applications that require fine resolution. The book consists of five chapters. The first chapter describes the fundamentals of radar sensors including applications followed by a review of ultra-wideband pulsed, frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW), and stepped-frequency radar sensors. The second chapter discusses a general analysis of radar sensors including wave propagation in media and scattering on targets, as well as the radar equation. The third chapter addresses the analysis of stepped-frequency radar sensors including their principles and design parameters. Chapter 4 presents the development of two stepped-frequency radar sensors at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies based on microwave integrated circuits (MICs), microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) and printed-circuit antennas, and discusses their signal processing. Chapter 5 provides the electrical characterization and test results of the developed microwave and millimeter-wave stepped-frequency radar sensors. Finally, a summary and conclusion is provided.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The design and development of two different, small, low-cost, low-power radar sensors are presented in this thesis. A stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar and a first-in-first-out (FIFO) noise radar are designed and implemented to detect and track moving ground vehicles through weedy foliage. This is done with both the target and radar close to the ground. In addition, the operating principles of both radar systems are presented from a mathematical point of view. The target tracking is performed both in range and azimuth. A monopulse technique is used to track targets in azimuth. Each of these radar sensors is implemented using state-of-the-art, surface mount, and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components. The operating band of the SFCW radar is chosen as 3.0 - 3.6 GHz. The design procedure of a new concept radar, called FIFO noise radar is presented in detail. The FIFO noise radar is operated at a center frequency of 3.3 GHz with a bandwidth of 100 MHz. The performance characteristics of both radar sensors are presented. It is shown that the SFCW radar is a feasible radar sensor for tracking moving ground targets in both range and azimuth, because of its high amplitude sensitivity and stability. The range tracking capabilities of the FIFO noise radar sensor are also presented.

Book excerpt: Stepped-frequency waveforms are being considered for inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging from ship and airborne platforms and for detailed radar cross section (RCS) measurements of ships and aircraft. These waveforms make it possible to achieve resolutions of 1.0 foot by using existing radar designs and processing technology. One problem not yet fully resolved in using stepped-frequency waveform for ISAR imaging is the deterioration in signal level caused by random frequency error. Random frequency error of the stepped-frequency source results in reduced peak responses and increased null responses. The resulting reduced signal-to-noise ratio is range dependent. Two of the major concerns addressed in this report are radar range limitations for ISAR and the error in calibration for RCS measurements caused by differences in range between a passive reflector used for an RCS reference and the target to be measured. In addressing these concerns, NOSC developed an analysis to assess the tolerable frequency error in terms of resulting power loss in signal power and signal-to-phase noise.

Book excerpt: As compared to the commonly used constant frequency radar waveforms, the stepped-frequency waveform can achieve high range resolution while still retaining the advantages of lower instantaneous receiver bandwidth and lower analog-to-digital sampling rate. However, the relative radial motion between the target and the stepped-frequency radar will result in performance degradations, such as range error, loss in signal-to-noise ratio, and degraded range resolution. The solution to this problem is to apply velocity compensation to the received signal, which can eliminate the degradations due to Doppler effects. Three velocity compensation schemes for the detection of a moving target in clutter are designed, discussed, and compared in this thesis. Also, a simulation is presented to verify the concepts, and simulation results are compared and discussed. (AN).

Book excerpt: A stepped frequency ground penetrating radar system is described comprising an RF signal generating section capable of producing stepped frequency signals in spaced and equal increments of time and frequency over a preselected bandwidth which serves as a common RF signal source for both a transmit portion and a receive portion of the system. In the transmit portion of the system the signal is processed into in-phase and quadrature signals which are then amplified and then transmitted toward a target. The reflected signals from the target are then received by a receive antenna and mixed with a reference signal from the common RF signal source in a mixer whose output is then fed through a low pass filter. The DC output, after amplification and demodulation, is digitized and converted into a frequency domain signal by a Fast Fourier Transform. A plot of the frequency domain signals from all of the stepped frequencies broadcast toward and received from the target yields information concerning the range (distance) and cross section (size) of the target.
