Book excerpt: Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies enable manufacturing systems to sense the environment, adapt to external needs, and extract process knowledge, including business models such as intelligent production, networked collaboration, and extended service models. This book therefore focuses on the implementation of AI in customized manufacturing (CM). The main topics include edge intelligence in manufacturing, heterogeneous networks, intelligent fault diagnosis and maintenance, dynamic resource scheduling in manufacturing, and the construction mode of the smart factory. Based on the insights of CM and AI, the authors demonstrate the implementation of AI in the smart factory for CM, including architecture, information fusion, data analysis, dynamic scheduling, flexible production line construction, and smart manufacturing services. This book will provide important research content for scholars in artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, machine learning, multi-agent systems, and industrial Internet of Things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De-industrialization, accelerated by the financial crisis, is a long term process. The comparative advantage of emerging economies shifted towards more advanced goods and their growing populations commanded an increasing share in global demand. This shift towards a factory-free economy in high income countries has drawn the attention of policy makers in North America and Europe. Some politicians have articulated alarming views, initiating mercantilist or 'beggar-thy-neighbour' cost-competitiveness policies. Yet companies that concentrate research and design innovations at home but no longer have any factories there may be the norm in the future. This volume proposes an economic analysis of this phenomenon and includes 11 contributions which complement each other and tackle the problem from different angles. The evidence in this book suggests that de-industrialization is a process that happens over time in all countries, even China. One implication is that criticism of China is not likely to provide a solution to these long term trends. Another implication is that the distinction between manufacturing and services is likely to become increasingly blurry. More manufacturing firms are engaging in services activities, and more wholesale firms are engaging in manufacturing. One optimistic perspective suggests that industrial country firms may be able to exploit the high-value added and skill-intensive activities associated with design and innovation, as well as distribution, which are all components of the global value chain for manufacturing. Although this ongoing transformation of the industrial economies may be consistent with evolving comparative advantage, it has significant short-run costs and requires far-sighted investments. These include the costs to workers who are caught in the shift from an industrial to a service economy, and the need to invest in new infrastructure and education to prepare coming generations for their changing roles.

Book excerpt: While some writers account for Japan's postwar economic "miracle" in terms of a distinctively Japanese, traditional model of social organization, the writers of this study consider Japan's technological growth to have been accompanied by convergence toward modernized social organization. The authors test both of these theoretical models. Their data are derived from a nine-month period of observation, analysis of company records, interviews of personnel, and questionnaire responses from production, staff, and managerial employees in three main Japanese firms. Other firms were visited more briefly. The analysis shows that the most distinctively Japanese variables have less causal impact on performance within a firm than do more universal variables such as employee status, sex, and job satisfaction. Book excerpt: STATUS FACTORY is a hardcover art book presenting new paintings from street art legend Ron English. In his paintings, English perverts and subverts the establishment, poking fun at religion, consumerism, and blind obedience to popular culture. He uses humor as a wake-up call, and renders it with meticulous brush strokes. Ron English populates alternate versions of "The Last Supper" and "Guernica" with cartoon characters, drops camouflaged clowns on dinosaurs, and births incredible creatures from his fertile imagination. Among reinterpretations of familiar characters like Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse, you'll find three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls, grinning skulls, and many more. In addition to over 180 images from his paintings, Status Factory includes over 100 photographs of English's street art installations, subverted billboards, and other public art. An afterword by the artist delves into his creative process, explaining how source materials are transformed into his riveting images. Luxuriously printed on heavy art paper, this large-format coffee table book showcases Ron English's art beautifully. A great addition to any art library focused on street art, pop surrealism, graffiti, and painting.
