Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequalities play a central role in mathematics with various applications in other disciplines. The main goal of this contributed volume is to present several important matrix, operator, and norm inequalities in a systematic and self-contained fashion. Some powerful methods are used to provide significant mathematical inequalities in functional analysis, operator theory and numerous fields in recent decades. Some chapters are devoted to giving a series of new characterizations of operator monotone functions and some others explore inequalities connected to log-majorization, relative operator entropy, and the Ando-Hiai inequality. Several chapters are focused on Birkhoff–James orthogonality and approximate orthogonality in Banach spaces and operator algebras such as C*-algebras from historical perspectives to current development. A comprehensive account of the boundedness, compactness, and restrictions of Toeplitz operators can be found in the book. Furthermore, an overview of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem is provided. The state-of-the-art of Hardy-Littlewood inequalities in sequence spaces is given. The chapters are written in a reader-friendly style and can be read independently. Each chapter contains a rich bibliography. This book is intended for use by both researchers and graduate students of mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Book excerpt: What could be regarded as the beginning of a theory of commutators AB - BA of operators A and B on a Hilbert space, considered as a dis cipline in itself, goes back at least to the two papers of Weyl [3] {1928} and von Neumann [2] {1931} on quantum mechanics and the commuta tion relations occurring there. Here A and B were unbounded self-adjoint operators satisfying the relation AB - BA = iI, in some appropriate sense, and the problem was that of establishing the essential uniqueness of the pair A and B. The study of commutators of bounded operators on a Hilbert space has a more recent origin, which can probably be pinpointed as the paper of Wintner [6] {1947}. An investigation of a few related topics in the subject is the main concern of this brief monograph. The ensuing work considers commuting or "almost" commuting quantities A and B, usually bounded or unbounded operators on a Hilbert space, but occasionally regarded as elements of some normed space. An attempt is made to stress the role of the commutator AB - BA, and to investigate its properties, as well as those of its components A and B when the latter are subject to various restrictions. Some applica tions of the results obtained are made to quantum mechanics, perturba tion theory, Laurent and Toeplitz operators, singular integral trans formations, and Jacobi matrices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to initiate a systematic study of those properties of Banach space complexes that are stable under certain perturbations. A Banach space complex is essentially an object of the form 1 op-l oP +1 ... --+ XP- --+ XP --+ XP --+ ... , where p runs a finite or infiniteinterval ofintegers, XP are Banach spaces, and oP : Xp ..... Xp+1 are continuous linear operators such that OPOp-1 = 0 for all indices p. In particular, every continuous linear operator S : X ..... Y, where X, Yare Banach spaces, may be regarded as a complex: O ..... X ~ Y ..... O. The already existing Fredholm theory for linear operators suggested the possibility to extend its concepts and methods to the study of Banach space complexes. The basic stability properties valid for (semi-) Fredholm operators have their counterparts in the more general context of Banach space complexes. We have in mind especially the stability of the index (i.e., the extended Euler characteristic) under small or compact perturbations, but other related stability results can also be successfully extended. Banach (or Hilbert) space complexes have penetrated the functional analysis from at least two apparently disjoint directions. A first direction is related to the multivariable spectral theory in the sense of J. L.

Book excerpt: Spectral theory of bounded linear operators teams up with von Neumann’s theory of unbounded operators in this monograph to provide a general framework for the study of stable methods for the evaluation of unbounded operators. An introductory chapter provides numerous illustrations of unbounded linear operators that arise in various inverse problems of mathematical physics. Before the general theory of stabilization methods is developed, an extensive exposition of the necessary background material from the theory of operators on Hilbert space is provided. Several specific stabilization methods are studied in detail, with particular attention to the Tikhonov-Morozov method and its iterated version.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the important aspects of spectral theory, in particular, the completeness of generalised eigenvectors, Riesz bases, semigroup theory, families of analytic operators, and Gribov operator acting in the Bargmann space. Recent mathematical developments of perturbed non-self-adjoint operators are discussed with the completeness of the space of generalized eigenvectors, bases on Hilbert and Banach spaces and asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of these operators. Most results in the book are motivated by physical problems, such as the perturbation method for sound radiation by a vibrating plate in a light fluid, Gribov operator in Bargmann space and other applications in mathematical physics and mechanics. This book is intended for students, researchers in the field of spectral theory of linear non self-adjoint operators, pure analysts and mathematicians.
