Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spenser's Minor Poems The aim of this volume is to present a trustworthy text of the Minor Poems of Spenser, based upon a collation of the editions published in the poet's lifetime with the Folio of 1611. As in Mr. J. C. Smith's edition of The Faerie Queene, to which this book is the companion volume, certain typographical peculiarities of the Quartos - long s, &, o, superscribed m and n (e.g. fro, whe) - are not reproduced, and the frequent practice in the Epistle and Glosses of The Shepheardes Calender of beginning a sentence with a small letter has been ignored; but with these exceptions every deviation from the text of the first editions has been recorded in the footnotes. The variations to be found in other Quartos, and in the Folio, are not so fully recorded; but every verbal change is noted, and any of those changes in spelling or punctuation which seem really significant, or bear upon the relation of the different Quartos and the Folio to one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spenser, and His Poetry, Vol. 1 of 3 With the single exception perhaps of Homer (who nowhere goes farther than a vague I or me, and only on some two or three occasions so far), all the great writers of the world who have not (like the dramatists) been precluded by the form of their compositions from ever coming forward in their own persons have told us, either by allusion or by direct statement, something of them selves in their writings. In general, indeed, an author's life both throws light upon his works, and derives illus tretien from them. Spenser's poetry abounds in refer caces to his personal history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spenser His Poetry A glance through the pages of this little book will suffice to disclose the general plan of the series of which it forms a part. Only a few words of explanation, therefore, will be necessary. The point of departure is the undeniable fact that with the vast majority of young students of literature a living interest in the work of any poet can best be aroused, and an intelligent appreciation of it secured, when it is immediately associated with the character and career of the poet himself. The cases are indeed few and far between in which much fresh light will not be thrown upon a poem by some knowledge of the personality of the writer, while it will often be found that the most direct - perhaps even the only - way to the heart of its meaning lies through a consideration of the circumstances in which it had its birth. The purely aesthetic critic may possibly object that a poem should be regarded simply as a self-contained and detached piece of art, having no personal affiliations or bearings. Of the validity of this as an abstract principle nothing need now be said. The fact remains that, in the earlier stages of study at any rate, poetry is most valued and loved when it is made to seem most human and vital and the human and vital interest of poetry can be most surely brought home to the reader by the biographical method of interpretation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Subject-Index to the Poems of Edmund Spenser Since this is not primarily a word-index, but a subject-index, I have not thought it necessary to record all the variations of spelling. The student who is interested in this feature of Spenser's poetry may find what he seeks in the Concordance. For head-words and quota tions I have normalized and modernized the spelling, in general using the index-form preferred by the New English Dictionary. Occasion ally, however, when I have felt that something was to be gained by preserving the exact form of Spenser's language, I have not hesitated to do so from any fear of inconsistency. Words invented by Spenser, for which there is no modern equivalent, are entered under the spelling most commonly used. Frequent cross-references are employed, so that little difficulty should be experienced in locating a word. The allegory of the Faery Queen has proved rather difficult to manage. It has not seemed necessary to identify every character of the poem, as some would do, with one or other of the figures who made the Elizabethan period illustrious. Allegorical interpretations are, however, admitted whenever there seems to be sufficient evidence to support them. Explanations by the compiler, whenever they do not immediately follow the head-word, are enclosed in parentheses.
