Book excerpt: In this powerful, life changing book, Catherine Yack now shares how she recovered from over two decades of drug and alcohol abuse, along with many other obstacles in her life. "I didn't do it alone. I've had many individuals in my life who have sown seeds in me, and it is the fruit of these seeds that I now pass on to others". Sowing Seeds of Recovery is not just about recovery from drugs or alcohol. It is about recovery from the pains and traumas of life. "Catherine Yack's book, Sowing Seeds of Recovery, ' shares timely truths and spiritual advice for this generation of believers. I believe this book is a must-read for anyone. Especially those who are navigating through the world of addiction and the drug culture. This book bridges gaps, with a common meeting ground for handling situations that come up in everyday life. It will also give anyone a starting place, or a restart on understanding Scripture and God's love." Steve Box, author of Meth = Sorcery, The Leviathan, and co-author of Life After Meth. Catherine Yack, in her book, shares the healing power from the "telling of the story," when reflected in testimony of God's love for us, while blending compassion from the Heart of God. Powerful book - powerful stories - foundational and complete. The reader is brought to a place of understanding that God is a God of relationship and we can "know" Him in a real way. The foundation of this book is based on the wisdom from the Word of God validating that the answers to life can be found in the Bible." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerating British Columbia's Forests will assist those responsible for planning reforestation projects to reach informed decisions and will challenge them to consider primarily the biological factors basic to reforestation success rather than short-term costs and production technology. Although its main audience is practising foresters and forestry students of British Columbia, the text will be of considerable interest to foresters in other parts of Canada, the United States, and Europe who manage reforestation.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In dry, open coniferous forests of the montane West, stand-replacing wildfires and land use activities alter the composition and abundance of native grasses and forbs by degrading the habitat and accelerating the invasion of exotic annuals. On these lands, native forbs and grasses delayed or prevented from recovery by natural processes may require intervention through supplementary seeding. However, effective seeding of native plants requires that their seed traits and the potential outcome of the seeding be better understood. This study evaluated seeds and seedlings of 13 native forbs and 5 grasses common in the dry Pinus ponderosa/Purshia tridentata/ Festuca idahoensis plant communities east of the Oregon Cascades crest and their potential for establishment in a landscape altered by past grazing and a recent, stand-replacing wildfire. Their potential for germination and establishment was examined in the laboratory and in 20 test plots located within the burned boundary of a 2002 wildfire. Seed collection, handling, testing, and sowing procedures are described. Data on seedling emergence, height, second-year survival and cover are presented in tables and figures. Onsite emergence and early growth data helped to reveal cause of early mortality related to biological and site conditions, including invasive competition, and differences in early growth and site occupancy. The study supports the efficacy of using multiple and functionally diverse species in a seeding program. Additional information on each of the 18 species is included in an appendix.

Book excerpt: World-wide, the degradation and destruction of both natural and traditionally used semi-natural ecosystems is drastically increasing. Unfortunately, commercial seed mixtures, consisting of non-native species and genetically uniform cultivars, are widely used in grassland restoration, often with negative effects on biodiversity. Therefore, native species should be used in the ecological restoration of natural and semi-natural vegetation. This book compiles results from recent studies presented at a Special Session “Native seed production and use in restoration projects”, which was organised during the 8th European Conference on Ecological Restoration in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. The authors review the ecological and genetic aspects of seed propagation and species introduction both from a European and an American perspective, and discuss implications for the development of seed zones and for native seed production. Examples from different countries focus on native seed production in practice, and suggest different approaches for the certification of seed provenance. Best practice examples from Europe and the United States are used to indicate the advantages of using native seeds for ecological restoration of grasslands, field margins and sagebrush steppe. Finally, this volume also provides guidelines for the successful implementation of restoration projects for local authorities, landscape planners and NGOs in order to bridge gaps between research and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant improvement has shifted its focus from yield, quality and disease resistance to factors that will enhance commerical export, such as early maturity, shelf life and better processing quality. Conventional plant breeding methods aiming at the improvement of a self-pollinating crop, such as wheat, usually take 10-12 years to develop and release of the new variety. During the past 10 years, significant advances have been made and accelerated methods have been developed for precision breeding and early release of crop varieties. This work summarizes concepts dealing with germplasm enhancement and development of improved varieties based on innovative methodologies that include doubled haploidy, marker assisted selection, marker assisted background selection, genetic mapping, genomic selection, high-throughput genotyping, high-throughput phenotyping, mutation breeding, reverse breeding, transgenic breeding, shuttle breeding, speed breeding, low cost high-throughput field phenotyping, etc. It is an important reference with special focus on accelerated development of improved crop varieties.
