Book excerpt: Soar with Solomon Screech Owl as he takes his "First Flight" on a grand adventure. This inquisitive, feisty little bird is sure that there must be a big world beyond his tree branch, and he sets out, with the help of some other species, on a quest to see all that this world has to show him. About the author and illustrator: Beth Lancione, of Etters, PA, retired from a long career in public education and began what she hopes will be a long second career as an author of children's books. The Solomon Screech Owl stories, conceived as an eight book series in which Sollie will visit the seven continents in his quest to see all that the world has to show him, was inspired by Beth's love for her grandchildren, her enjoyment of adventurous travel, and her experiences working with owls as a volunteer at a rescue facility for injured birds of prey. Kathy Haney, a retired high school art teacher, resides in Salem, Oregon. She is an active award-winning artist, creating drawings and watercolor paintings, designing posters, and illustrating books. An area of special interest for her is early childhood literacy, having taught young parents the value of reading to their infants, volunteering in Guatemala's efforts to increase literacy in indigenous peoples, and proudly being the first person to read a book to her grandchildren. Kathy and her husband, Gary, love to travel, and much of her artwork reflects the peoples and cultures they encountered. She is excited to share the adventure of travel with Solomon's readers. Beth and Kathy have been friends since high school. The Solomon Screech Owl series is their first literary collaboration.

Solomon Owl is known far and wide for his wisdom, and he is highly respected by the other animals of the forest. However, his wisdom is not just about offering advice; it extends to his remarkable ability to see and hear even in the darkest of nights, thanks to his keen night vision and exceptional hearing. Throughout the story, readers are introduced to Solomon's daily life and activities. He spends his nights hunting for mice and other small creatures, relying on his sharp senses to locate his prey. His nocturnal habits make him a mysterious and somewhat enigmatic figure in the forest. As the story unfolds, Solomon Owl becomes embroiled in a series of forest adventures and encounters other woodland creatures, including some who are not as respectful of him as others. These interactions provide valuable lessons about respect, friendship, and the importance of wisdom. Book excerpt: A great book for parents to read to their youngest children, and then for the children to read for themselves as they grow!"In spite of the mild, questioning look upon his face whenever anyone surprised him in the daytime, Solomon Owl was the noisiest of all the different families of owls in Pleasant Valley. There were the barn owls, the long-eared owls, the short-eared owls, the saw-whet owls, the screech owls—but there! there's no use of naming them all. There wasn't one of them that could equal Solomon Owl's laughing and hooting and shrieking and wailing—at night. During the day, however, Solomon Owl he was quiet about it. One reason for his silence then was that he generally slept when the sun was shining. And when most people were sleeping, Solomon Owl was as wide awake as he could be. He was a night-prowler—if ever there was one. And he could see a mouse on the darkest night, even if it stirred ever so slightly. That was unfortunate for the mice. But luckily for them, Solomon Owl couldn't be in more than one place at a time. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been a mouse left in Pleasant Valley—if he could have had his way. "

Book excerpt: Bird Stories is a collection of animal stories featuring birds as protagonists written by Edith M. Patch. Patch was an American entomologist and writer. Excerpt: "Larie was all alone in a little world. He had lived there many days, and had spent the time, minute by minute and hour by hour, doing nothing at all but growing. That one thing he had done well. There is no doubt about that; for he had grown from a one-celled little beginning of life into a creature so big that he filled the whole of his world crammed full. It was smooth, and it was hard, and its sides were curved around and about him so tightly that he could not even stretch his legs. There was no door. Larie was a prisoner. The prison-walls of his world held him so fast that he could not budge. That is, he could not budge anything but his head. He could move that a little."
