Book excerpt: The first decade of the 21st century marked an important period in global demographics. For the first time in human history more people were living in urban than in rural areas. Rural and urban regions are closely intertwined and shaped by an ambiguous relationship. Rural regions are important deliverers of resources such as food, construction materials or energy and are thus enablers of these urban lifestyles. Rural regions are also places of aspiration and desire for a life closer to nature or in search for “wilderness” or “authenticity” of rural lifestyles, which people from cities would like to explore and experience during their visits. This ambiguous relationship is increasingly felt in rural regions in multiple ways e.g., through emigration of young people, the loss of jobs and economic possibilities, or the exploitation of land and infrastructure for businesses, enabling the flow of resources and capital into cities. Rural regions are therefore confronted with numerous challenges. For these regions it becomes important to continuously re-define or re-invent themselves in an increasingly urbanized and economized world, by at the same time protecting their natural assets and beauty and enabling both ecologically, socially and economically sustainable lifestyles. This publication aims to provide comprehensive information on the importance of social capital to achieve long lasting sustainable development that brings prosperity to rural areas. Sustainable development in this context is understood as positive development in all three dimensions of the sustainability triangle, namely economic, social and environmental. All of them equally important to create prosper rural areas with the ability to thrive. Social capital is the glue that helps people to organize themselves in groups in order to achieve socioeconomic benefits for the whole community. However, while the significance of social capital for economic and social development has been covered extensively in literature, the specific role it plays for sustainable development of rural areas at large could and should be further explored. For this, both theoretical and practical information is provided with eight illustrative case studies from Austria, Spain, Portugal and Türkiye that serve as best practice examples. These case studies show how communities achieve positive development in all three sustainability dimensions through the strengthening of social capital. At the end of the book, we discuss the significance of social capital for the success of these case studies and present a new definition of social capital that integrates the economic, social and environmental dimension.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Starting from the 1950s, Thailand had experienced unprecedented economic boom in the nation’s history until the 1980s. The average annual growth in the 1960s was 8%, 7%in the 1970s, and 4-6% in the beginning of the 1980s [1]. Thai people, especially those who are in the nation’s capital, Bangkok, enjoyed the economic boom and started to have “modernized” lifestyle. However, behind the scene of the national economic success, rural villages were forced to face predicament because of the urbancentered industrial economy based on neo-liberal economic beliefs. In light of the historical context of the relationship between Thai community and the high-powered state authority, examining one specific community which is struggling to find a way of development in the globalized world today will be of great help to understand the contemporary notion of rural development in Thailand. In this paper, focus is centered on a village called Mae Kampong, which has been under great influence of the Royal project and the Government in terms of development, and yet has a great deal of potential for achieving a selfreliant way of community governance because of its traits as a traditional agrarian rural community. This paper aims to examine the socio-cultural changes that occurred in the village over the course of the contemporary development and ultimately the outlook of community self-sufficiency and selfreliance, deploying a realistic and empirical approach to look at the Thailand’s contemporary phenomena happening in the rural communities. Mae Kampong is the third village of seven villages in Huai Kaew sub-district, Mae On district, Chiang Mai province, Northern Thailand, known as a major producer of Northern Thai traditional tea product called Mieng. It is located east of Chiang Mai province, about 50 kilometers from the city, average 1,300 meters above the sea level. It has been about 100 years since the first generation of this village that had been searching for suitable places for tea cultivation came from nearby areas to settle in the location and started to form the community. Now, the village has 134 households and 374 people in total. The village consists of six clusters, Pang Nok, Pang Klang, Pang Khon, Pang Ton, Pan Nai No.1, and Pang Nai No.2.

Providing an alternative to past industries such as ranching, agriculture, mining, and logging, tourism has been heralded by some as a panacea for the revitalisation of what are largely declining economic bases, whilst others have described it as a destructive force that has brought about many economic, environmental, and socio-cultural concerns. Although significant recognition exists within the academic literature regarding the various economic and environmental impacts resulting from mountain resort tourism, there appears to be a lack of detailed and targeted examination of its socio-cultural sustainability. My research addresses this gap within the mountain resort tourism literature by focusing on this often overlooked dimension of sustainability. This is achieved through using social capital as a conceptual lens to examine the networks, norms, and resources that form a part of our everyday socialisation. While social capital has been widely adopted within sociology, its use in exploring tourism phenomena has thus far been limited. This is despite its ability to highlight the various sociological processes and interactions that occur within tourism-dependent communities and how they have been affected by tourism development.Adopting an ethnographic case study design, I immersed myself within the community of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, living and participating in the daily activities of community members for ten months spanning the winter and summer tourism seasons. During this time, I undertook 53 qualitative interviews with a range of community members from various interest areas to help illuminate many of the socio-cultural issues faced as a result of mountain resort tourism. I accompanied these with participant observation of both special events and day-to-day activities, which were recorded in a field work journal. This was alongside photographs that were captured to provide a complementary visual record of my observations and experiences, as well as the analysis of relevant documentation in the form of council and county reports and plans, the local newspaper, local websites, and magazines. Overall, my research identified mountain resort tourism as having brought about a wide range of impacts that have affected the social capital components of networks, norms, and resources in numerous ways. These effects include the strengthening of community bonding networks, the reinforcement of social norms, and the mobilisation of shared resources through collective action; all of which highlight the existence of such positive aspects of socio-cultural sustainability as a sense of community, democratic community participation, collaboration, and empowerment. At the same time, mountain resort tourism was found to have contributed to such negative social capital outcomes as the social exclusion and isolation of newcomers and other marginalised groups within the community, the creation of anti-social norms in response to its many impacts, resource inequities both within Steamboat Springs and between the surrounding communities, and a growing sense of powerlessness. These outcomes appear reflective of the socio-culturally unsustainable nature of mountain resort tourism as they can be seen as negatively affecting quality of life, a sense of community ownership and attachment, the ability and willingness of many community members to democratically and equitably participate, and the likelihood of inter-community collaboration, whilst also exacerbating socio-economic class distinctions. This raises a number of socio-cultural concerns for the community of Steamboat Springs in regards to the long-term sustainability of mountain resort tourism. In particular, my research highlights the importance of more effective tourism governance, with the community needing to address such issues as future community ownership, democratic and equitable community representation, increased government transparency, and the development of intra- and inter-community bridging networks in order for the socio-cultural sustainability of mountain resort tourism to be achieved. At the same time, the potential for social capital to act as a heuristic device to guide the examination of the socio-cultural sustainability of tourism can also be noted. This is because of its ability to go beyond the identification of mountain resort tourism impacts to explore how individuals, groups, and organisations within tourism-dependent communities have responded to tourism development and its effects on their everyday lives, thereby providing a more holistic understanding of tourism sustainability within a mountain resort community context.
