Book excerpt: This book focuses on near-zero energy buildings (NZEBs), smart communities and microgrids. In this context, demand response (DR) is associated with significant environmental and economic benefits when looking at how electricity grids, communities and buildings can operate optimally. In DR, the consumer becomes a prosumer with an important active role in the exchange of energy on an hourly basis. DR is gradually gaining ground with respect to the reduction of peak loads, grid balancing and dealing with the volatility of renewable energy sources (RES). This transition calls for high environmental awareness and new tools or services that will improve the dynamic as well as secure multidirectional exchange of energy and data. Overall, DR is identified as an important field for technological and market innovations aligned with climate change mitigation policies and the transition to sustainable smart grids in the foreseeable future. Smart Buildings, Smart Communities and Demand Response provides an insight into various intrinsic aspects of DR potential, at the building and the community level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the Special Issue of Energies, entitled "Demand-Response in Smart Buildings", that was published in the section "Energy and Buildings". This Special Issue is a collection of original scientific contributions and review papers that deal with smart buildings and communities. Demand response (DR) offers the capability to apply changes in the energy usage of consumers-from their normal consumption patterns-in response to changes in energy pricing over time. This leads to a lower energy demand during peak hours or during periods when an electricity grid's reliability is put at risk. Therefore, demand response is a reduction in demand designed to reduce peak load or avoid system emergencies. Hence, demand response can be more cost-effective than adding generation capabilities to meet the peak and/or occasional demand spikes. The underlying objective of DR is to actively engage customers in modifying their consumption in response to pricing signals. Demand response is expected to increase energy market efficiency and the security of supply, which will ultimately benefit customers by way of options for managing their electricity costs leading to reduced environmental impact.

Book excerpt: Smart zero-energy buildings and communities have a major role to play in the evolution of the electric grid towards alignment with carbon neutrality policies. The goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment can be pursued through a holistic approach, including the drastic reduction of buildings’ energy consumption. The state-of-the-art in this field relates, on the one hand, to design methodologies and innovative technologies which aim to minimize the energy demand at the building level. On the other hand, the development of information and communication technologies, along with the integration of renewable energy and storage, provide the basis for zero and positive energy buildings and communities that can produce, store, manage and exchange energy at a local level. This book provides a structured and detailed insight of the state-of-the-art in this context based on the analysis of real case studies and applications.

Cities and, on a smaller scale, neighborhoods, building managers and firms are now adopting technologies and information systems to help achieve the energy, economic, social and environmental transition. This volume gathers contributions on the key organizational success factors for this transition. To do so, it analyzes the role of information systems, use of data, and technological assistance solutions from multiple perspectives. The goal is to develop a framework that can successfully apply information systems to organizational and environmental issues for smart cities and smart buildings. Accordingly, the book addresses living-lab experiment evaluation techniques, and provides critical analyses of the role of the environment, context and users’ behavioral responses. In addition, it discusses key questions on the efficient management of resources, need for appropriate IT solutions, and employing co-creation with users to improve planning and organization.
