Book excerpt: Successful startups and small businesses can play a significant role in economic growth and job creation. They also contribute to economic dynamism by spurring innovation and injecting competition. Startups are known to introduce new products and services that can create new value in the economy. It is notable that most startups exit within their first ten years, and most surviving young businesses do not grow but remain small. Startups and small businesses face several obstacles to their development. Accessing capital is a crucial constraint on their growth. Most startups and small businesses have difficulties getting the funds they need because of their lack of a performance track record and lack of collateral, making it difficult for lenders or investors to assess their risk. Besides, they are in the early stages of development and face a very high possibility of failure, which significantly raises financing and investment risk.Investment in Startups and Small Business Financing provides 12 thematic and case studies on new methods for bringing private investment (loans or equity) to startups and easing small businesses' access to finance (debt and capital). The contributors are senior-level policy experts and researchers from governments, think tanks, academia, and international organizations. The chapters are authored in a policy-oriented way to be understandable for the readers with a different background. This book is a precious source for the governments for adopting the right policies to develop small businesses and startups and valuable for the researchers in economics, business, and finance.

With SMEs making up some 96% of all Asian businesses, the report explains the challenges they commonly face and analyzes the impact of specialized financing facilities in the ROK and the US. An Overview of the Shortcomings in the UK and European Securities Regulation and Considerations for Reform written by Hse-Yu Chiu and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article deals with several aspects of the need for growth capital for small businesses in the UK. First, the article makes a comparison between equity and debt capital as financing options for a growing small business. The article then advocates the superiority of equity capital in meeting small business needs. Equity capital, supported by the legal rules on the maintenance of capital, provides small businesses a degree of permanence that is important for growth purposes. The article then examines the advantages of public equity financing and advocates the view that public equity is better suited to meet growth capital needs because it allows perpetuity in the capital provided. This degree of perpetuity is provided by the availability of secondary markets where shares could change hands. The article next explores the weaknesses in the UK and European legal infrastructure in securities regulation and why it does not meet small business needs in seeking public equity financing. These weaknesses may be further augmented if the European draft Prospectus Directive comes to pass. This article concludes by recommending that Europe should consider the modification of its one-size-fits-all mandatory disclosure rules in securities regulation and adopt a tiered disclosure regime based on issue size, akin to U.S. federal securities law, in order to facilitate small business access to the public equity markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack the Funding Code demystifies the world of angel investing, venture capital, and corporate funding and lays out a strategic pathway for any entrepreneur to secure funding fast. Lack of funding is one of the biggest reasons small businesses fail. In 2016 in the United States alone, more than 31 percent of small business owners reported that they could not access adequate capital, and the lack of capital prevented them from growing the business/expanding operations, increasing inventory, or financing increased sales. This book will show you how to find the money, create pitches that attract investors, and then structure fair, ethical deals that will bring them new sources of outside capital and invaluable professional advice. Crack the Funding Code gives you the broader perspective on: how funding works, how investors think, and what they need to hear to put their money where your mouth is. Every entrepreneur who reads this book will get easy-to-follow deal checklists, a roadmap of where and how to locate the best funding resources and top business mentors for their industry or geographical location, and a step-by-step process to create pitches that make their idea or business irresistible.
