Book excerpt: Grief-stricken widower Lord Matthias Waterford, master of Havensbeck Manor, sends messages in a bottle to his lost wife and child. He throws them into the river by night, never knowing they are being found and read by spirited vicar's ward Bernadette Goodrich! A Christmas Ball brings the two together in a plot by a mischievous little brother and an interfering butler! By turns heartfelt and hilarious, Sleepless in Staffordshire is a charming Regency romance take on the romantic Nora Ephron film "Sleepless in Seattle".

Book excerpt: Jean Stafford burst on the literary scene in 1944, when, at the age of twenty-nine, she published her bestselling novel, Boston Adventure. Three years later, Life magazine hailed her as the "most brilliant of the new fiction writers." Bafflingly, for the rest of her life, Stafford would struggle--and fail--to capitalize on that early promise. David Roberts' compelling biography examines Stafford's disastrous marriages, including her first marriage to the volatile poet Robert Lowell, which culminated for her in a lengthy stay in a psychiatric hospital. Beautiful and gifted, Stafford squandered her health as well as her talent, ending her life embittered and alone.

Book excerpt: Set in an industrial, relatively poor district of North Staffordshire, “A Staffordshire Lad” is a sensitive, innocent, and frank portrayal of an ordinary boy growing up during the Second World War in an ordinary family amongst ordinary people. There are no heroes. It is a story that was common to tens of thousands of children born at this time, and it is this very ordinariness that gives it its power. The story provides an insight into the author’s grandparents struggling to make ends meet, the risks of childbirth, and the dangers to coal miners. It paints graphic descriptions of those times, experiences that were still prevalent during and after the author’s birth. It provides a journey of a child born in the austere times of the midthirties, already under the shadow of war, through the conflict, family life, education, playing, and development through to national service and adulthood. It contains many of the elements of wartime childhood, such as rationing, evacuees, gas masks, air-raid shelters, and identity cards. The author describes that some parts of the story are written reflectively and some retrospectively, ignoring the traditional rules of tense. “Sometimes I would type away in ‘diary fashion,’ adding bits and pieces as they came to me, but more often than not, I would get lost in the past and relive the times as if they were happening for the first time.” It is more than a snapshot; it is a microcosm of the times when most people’s lives were on hold, not only in the years prior to and during the war, but also for a long period afterwards. It is a work of social history that helps bring back powerful memories.

Book excerpt: A restless inquiry into the cultural and psychic sources of insomnia by one of contemporary French literature’s most elegant voices. Plagued by insomnia for twenty years, Marie Darrieussecq turns her attention to the causes, implications, and consequences of sleeplessness: a nocturnal suffering that culminates at 4 a.m. and then defines the next day. “Insomniac mornings are dead mornings,” she observes. Prevented from falling asleep by her dread of exhaustion the next day, Darrieussecq turns to hypnosis, psychoanalysis, alcohol, pills, and meditation. Her entrapment within this spiraling anguish prompts her inspired, ingenious search across literature, geopolitical history, psychoanalysis, and her own experience to better understand where insomnia comes from and what it might mean. There are those, she writes, in Rwanda, whose vivid memories of genocide leave them awake and transfixed by complete horror; there is the insomnia of the unhoused, who have nowhere to put their heads down. The hyperconnection of urban professional life transforms her bedroom from a haven to a dormant electrified node. Ranging between autobiography, clinical observation, and criticism, Sleepless is a graceful, inventive meditation by one of the most daring, inventive novelists writing today.
