Book excerpt: I should have resisted him, but I was too weak to fight the devil himself. And Tyler Burnham is the devil. He used me. He lied to me. But he loved me. He still does. Mackenzie Delano never wants to hear the name Tyler Burnham again. Never wants to feel her soul ignite from his simple touch. Never wants to be reminded of how foolish she was to let him into her life and her heart. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as she wishes. Not when he managed to do the one thing she never thought possible… He taught her how to love again. Except none of it was real. Or so she thinks... Tyler Burnham thought he experienced loss and heartache before, but that was nothing compared to the excruciating pain consuming him every minute of every day since he watched Mackenzie walk out of his life. As he tries to make peace with the role he played in betraying her trust, he tries to find a way to prove that his feelings for her are true. That the love they shared is real. That he would walk through fire to keep her at his side. That he would sacrifice it all...his career, his fortune, his life...to protect her. That he would gladly slay the dragons that have tormented her for too long now. As he digs deeper into the conspiracy surrounding her father and the tangled web of secrets unravels, he realizes he may just have to. Slaying the Dragon is the jaw-dropping conclusion to T.K. Book excerpt: An inside view of China's quest to become a global wine power and Bordeaux's attempt to master the thirsty dragon it helped create The wine merchants of Bordeaux and the rising entrepreneurs of China would seem to have little in common—old world versus new, tradition versus disruption, loyalty versus efficiency. And yet these two communities have found their destinies intertwined in the conquest of new markets, as Suzanne Mustacich shows in this provocative account of how China is reshaping the French wine business and how Bordeaux is making its mark on China. Thirsty Dragon lays bare the untold story of how an influx of Chinese money rescued France's most venerable wine region from economic collapse, and how the result was a series of misunderstandings and crises that threatened the delicate infrastructure of Bordeaux's insular wine trade. The Bordelais and the Chinese do business according to different and often incompatible sets of rules, and Mustacich uncovers the competing agendas and little-known actors who are transforming the economics and culture of Bordeaux, even as its wines are finding new markets—and ever higher prices—in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong, with Hong Kong and London traders playing a pivotal role. At once a tale of business skullduggery and fierce cultural clashes, adventure, and ambition, Thirsty Dragon offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges facing the world's most famous and prestigious wines.

Book excerpt: The real fight is the one you can't see. The supernatural realm is very real, and it directly impacts our day-to-day lives. Often spiritual battles lie behind our everyday struggles. Though the spiritual world is invisible, we are not unaware of the enemy's schemes. Through God's Word and the power of the Holy Spirit we are equipped to be more than conquerors through Christ! With doctrinally sound, practical teaching, Slaying Dragons shows how the demonic realm fits into orthodox thoughts on salvation, redemption, and kingdom life. Daniel Kolenda demystifies spiritual warfare to shine light on what the enemy is doing in readers' lives and what they can do to slay every dragon they encounter. It also contains real-world examples of encounters with spiritual darkness, demonstrating examples of how "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5, NIV). It's easy to lose sight of the big picture as we focus on our everyday struggles. But our daily battles are part of a much bigger war, and we have been given all we need to win. Slaying Dragons will show readers what the enemy is trying to accomplish and how they can slay every dragon they encounter--in their lives and in the world. This book will teach you to see and overcome the spiritual battles behind your everyday struggles. Also Available in Spanish ISBN: 978-1-62999-283-9 Other Books by Daniel Kolenda: Live Before You Die (2013) ISBN: 978-1616387167

Book excerpt: Listen! For I sing of Owen Thorskard: valiant of heart, hopeless at algebra, last in a long line of legendary dragon slayers. Though he had few years and was not built for football, he stood between the town of Trondheim and creatures that threatened its survival. There have always been dragons. As far back as history is told, men and women have fought them, loyally defending their villages. Dragon slaying was a proud tradition. But dragons and humans have one thing in common: an insatiable appetite for fossil fuels. From the moment Henry Ford hired his first dragon slayer, no small town was safe. Dragon slayers flocked to cities, leaving more remote areas unprotected.Such was Trondheim's fate until Owen Thorskard arrived. At sixteen, with dragons advancing and his grades plummeting, Owen faced impossible odds--armed only with a sword, his legacy, and the classmate who agreed to be his bard.Listen! I am Siobhan McQuaid. I alone know the story of Owen, the story that changes everything. Listen!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third book to be published from the vaults of the Van Helsing family library and presents the accumulated wisdom of Adelia Van Helsing. The first female Van Helsing to take up the sword and do battle with the denizens of Hell, Adelia lived some seven centuries ago. Dragon Hunter’s Handbook is in fact a prequel to both Demon and Vampire Hunter, and like these two books it weaves practical advice about combating dragons with a journal of Adelia's most terrifying encounters. Within these pages are notes on identifying different types of dragon, proven tactics for defeating them, effective weaponry and armor, and how to find their lairs. Interwoven with this useful information is the tale of Adelia’s battle against the most terrifying foe of her career, a dragon simply known as “The Ancient.” Traveling to a remote Tibetan village she discovers that far from being a dwindling threat, dragons are regrouping and are about to unleash monstrous revenge on the human race. Faced with a power even she cannot resist, she summons the dragon’s most fearsome opponent, the servants of hell. But no Van Helsing makes a pact with the devil without consequences, and in the final act of dispatching The Ancient, her brother Caspar, is dragged through hell’s portal to a life of torment. wordcount:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How to Kill a Dragon Calvert Watkins follows the continuum of poetic formulae in Indo-European languages, from Old Hittite to medieval Irish. He uses the comparative method to reconstruct traditional poetic formulae of considerable complexity that stretch as far back as the original common language. Thus, Watkins reveals the antiquity and tenacity of the Indo-European poetic tradition. Watkins begins this study with an introduction to the field of comparative Indo-European poetics; he explores the Saussurian notions of synchrony and diachrony, and locates the various Indo-European traditions and ideologies of the spoken word. Further, his overview presents case studies on the forms of verbal art, with selected texts drawn from Indic, Iranian, Greek, Latin, Hittite, Armenian, Celtic, and Germanic languages. In the remainder of the book, Watkins examines in detail the structure of the dragon/serpent-slaying myths, which recur in various guises throughout the Indo-European poetic tradition. He finds the "signature" formula for the myth--the divine hero who slays the serpent or overcomes adversaries--occurs in the same linguistic form in a wide range of sources and over millennia, including Old and Middle Iranian holy books, Greek epic, Celtic and Germanic sagas, down to Armenian oral folk epic of the last century. Watkins argues that this formula is the vehicle for the central theme of a proto-text, and a central part of the symbolic culture of speakers of the Proto-Indo-European language: the relation of humans to their universe, the values and expectations of their society. Therefore, he further argues, poetry was a social necessity for Indo- European society, where the poet could confer on patrons what they and their culture valued above all else: "imperishable fame."
