Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years in Upper Canada With Autobiographical Recollections The story to be related by me, at the request of various friends, is one marked by few uncommon incidents and fewer extraordinary events. It tells somewhat of the social advancement of Upper Canada, and much more of its political progress, and I have endeavored to portray, candidly and faithfully, some of the leading occurrences of the past sixty years in that direction. In that time I have witnessed the new growth of an old Province, now rejuvenated and well on its way to manhood and nationality. To do this with a knowledge that men are still living, or have but lately passed from the scene, under and largely by whom these changes have been effected, is to attempt a difficult task. It is to write, to some extent at least, with fettered hands, and to be tempted to almost beg a question when outspokenness is preferable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years of Protection in Canada, 1846 1912: Where Industry Leans on the Politician Sixty Years of Protection in Canada was written in 1907, as a contribution to the free trade forces in the fight that was going on in England over the proposal to return to a protective system. In 1910 the history was carried a little further in The Revolt against the New Feudalism in Canada, a description of the uprising of the farmers and grain growers against the National Policy of Conservatives and Liberals. Both of these books were published by the Cobden Club, primarily for English readers. In the present edition which, by the courtesy of the Cobden Club, is being published in Canada by the Grain Growers' Guide, the history has been adapted to the needs of Canadian rather than English readers. All that is essential of the historical part of the two earlier works has been retained, but the chapters relating to the prairie provinces have been shortened, as they covered ground necessarily familiar to the constituency to which the book is now addressed. New chapters have been added covering the history down to the defeat of the reciprocity agreement with the United States at the General Election of 1911. Much has had to be omitted of the earlier books merely on account of lack of space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Sixty Years Born in Sir 1821 Charles Tupper at ninety-two is an interesting psychological study, as much for his present outlook on life at that advanced age as on account of his remarkable achievements. The oldest living statesman in the world, he reminds one of a stately and venerable oak which, unaffected by the storms of earlier years, still exhibits wonderful vitality. Unlike men twenty years his junior, who are living in the past and who have lost all concern in everything except their immediate surroundings, Sir Charles still feels the pulse-beat of the world day by day. His mind is as keen and plastic, his memory, even of recent happenings, as clear as they were during his early manhood. He is at once a surprise and a revelation to friends and relatives. He is a constant reader of the magazines and newspapers, watching with deep interest the progress of events at home and abroad. Sir Charles is descended from sturdy stock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Canada In the following pages will be found some contributions towards the history of Canada and of the manners and customs of its inhabitants during the hundred years beginning October 5th, 1792. On that date my ancestor, Roger Conant, a graduate of Yale University, and a Massachusetts landowner, set foot on Canadian soil as a United Empire Loyalist. From him and from his descendants - handed down from father to son - there have come to me certain historical particulars which I regard as a trust and which I herewith give to the public. I am of the opinion that it is in such plain and unvarnished statements that future historians of our country will find their best materials, and I therefore feel constrained to do my share towards the task of supplying them. The population of Canada is but five and one-third millions, but who can tell what it will be in a few decades?
