He was re-elected President in 1849, 1851, and 1853, and again in 1871 and 1873, making eighteen years during which he administered the affairs of that nation. In connection with several visits to Europe, President Roberts did valuable service for Liberia in securing the recognition of her nation ality by foreign Powers, in opening the way for the negotiation of treaties of amity and commerce, and in Obtaining, as presents from the English and French Governments, two vessels of war for the Coast service, and uniforms and arms for the militia Of the Republic.
