Book excerpt: This is the third volume in a series of private letters written by Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929) to his close friends. Volume One comprises his letters to Japanologists William George Aston and Frederick Victor Dickins. Volume Two consists mainly of letters to and from John Harington Gubbins who had worked under Satow in Japan. In this third volume Satow mainly discusses international law (law of the sea in wartime, Versailles peace treaty etc.) and the current political situation in the UK and Europe, a far cry from his East Asian focus on Japan which monopolised Volume One, and was still evident in Volume Two. (Lord Reay had no experience of Japan in his distinguished career.) The expert foreword is by Dr. J.E. Hoare, formerly of H.M. Diplomatic Service and a Teaching Fellow at S.O.A.S.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an introductory guide for students to four centuries of diplomatic thought. Since diplomacy as we know it was created during the Renaissance in Italy, a number of major figures have reflected on the place of diplomacy in foreign affairs and the problems associated with its pursuit. These include statesmen, international lawyers and historians, most of whom had experience as diplomats of the first or second rank. This book examines the thought of some of the most important of them, from Niccolò Machiavelli in the early sixteenth century to Henry Kissinger in the late twentieth century.

This accessible volume supplements the analyses of more familiar topics in the introductory literature on diplomacy. Experts from nine countries examine some of the ways in which diplomatic practice after 1945 has adapted to fundamental changes in international relations, or is still trying to come to terms with them. This book gives insights into a transforming diplomatic landscape and the changing forms and modalities of contemporary diplomacy.

It discusses the relationship between diplomacy and propaganda from an exciting new perspective, illustrated by a fascinating case-study.
