Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legacy of a Singular Life is a compilation of the poetry, essays and stories of Miss H. Almeda Boulton. If she loved anything it was nature: the innocence of trees, the joy of the bird, the mischief of a squirrel, the mystery of weather, the history of the rock or mountains and seas. She lived her life watching, recording what she saw into her quick, inquisitive mind. Her poetry relates her observations without the frills ofromanticism or obscurity and rings with a clear truth. Circumstances set her apart from relationships she craved. Those few she regarded as enduring were taken from her at various times in her life. Her strict independence was founded upon the realization that only one person was completely and absolutely trustworthy: herself. This was not a selfish condition. It was all she knew. She would be amazedto know her writings are of interest. There is much to learn from them and her thoughts and philosophies are valuable lessons to betaught to all generations. She died at the great age of 96. Her closest and most endearing kin was Mother Nature. She rests in the sanctuary of the arms ofMother Earth with her treasuredancestors in Caro, MI. May God grant her peace and respite. She lived a rewarding and abundant life with fearless exuberance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Singular Voice of Being reconsiders John Duns Scotus’s well-studied theory of the univocity of being in light of his less explored discussions of ultimate difference. Ultimate difference is a notion introduced by Aristotle and known by the Aristotelian tradition, but one that, this book argues, Scotus radically retrofits to buttress his doctrine of univocity. Scotus broadens ultimate difference to include not only specific differences, but also intrinsic modes of being (e.g., finite/infinite) and principles of individuation (i.e., haecceitates). Furthermore, he deepens it by divorcing it from anything with categorical classification, such as substantial form. Scotus uses his revamped notion of ultimate difference as a means of dividing being, despite the longstanding Parmenidean arguments against such division. The book highlights the unique role of difference in Scotus’s thought, which conceives of difference not as a fall from the perfect unity of being but rather as a perfective determination of an otherwise indifferent concept. The division of being culminates in individuation as the final degree of perfection, which constitutes indivisible (i.e., singular) degrees of being. This systematic study of ultimate difference opens new dimensions for understanding Scotus’s dense thought with respect to not only univocity, but also to individuation, cognition, and acts of the will.

Nancy's fundamental argument is that being is always "being with," that "I" is not prior to "we," that existence is essentially co-existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology explores the role that the singular plays in the theories of science of Robert Grosseteste, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Marsilius of Inghen, and Pierre d'Ailly. It pursues the question specifically in relation to the question of whether theology is a science. The work argues that the main issue in debates concerns whether theology is a science and how to provide a 'rational ground' for existing singulars. Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology exposes how, on the eve of modernity, existing singulars were freed from the constraints of rational ground.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singular algebraic curves have been in the focus of study in algebraic geometry from the very beginning, and till now remain a subject of an active research related to many modern developments in algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and tropical geometry. The monograph suggests a unified approach to the geometry of singular algebraic curves on algebraic surfaces and their families, which applies to arbitrary singularities, allows one to treat all main questions concerning the geometry of equisingular families of curves, and, finally, leads to results which can be viewed as the best possible in a reasonable sense. Various methods of the cohomology vanishing theory as well as the patchworking construction with its modifications will be of a special interest for experts in algebraic geometry and singularity theory. The introductory chapters on zero-dimensional schemes and global deformation theory can well serve as a material for special courses and seminars for graduate and post-graduate students.Geometry in general plays a leading role in modern mathematics, and algebraic geometry is the most advanced area of research in geometry. In turn, algebraic curves for more than one century have been the central subject of algebraic geometry both in fundamental theoretic questions and in applications to other fields of mathematics and mathematical physics. Particularly, the local and global study of singular algebraic curves involves a variety of methods and deep ideas from geometry, analysis, algebra, combinatorics and suggests a number of hard classical and newly appeared problems which inspire further development in this research area.
