Book excerpt: An enormously entertaining account of the gifted and eccentric directors who gave us the golden age of modern horror in the 1970s, bringing a new brand of politics and gritty realism to the genre. Much has been written about the storied New Hollywood of the 1970s, but at the same time as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola were making their first classic movies, a parallel universe of directors gave birth to the modern horror film-aggressive, raw, and utterly original. Based on unprecedented access to the genre's major players, The New York Times's critic Jason Zinoman's Shock Value delivers the first definitive account of horror's golden age. By the late 1960s, horror was stuck in the past, confined mostly to drive-in theaters and exploitation houses, and shunned by critics. Shock Value tells the unlikely story of how the much-disparaged horror film became an ambitious art form while also conquering the multiplex. Directors such as Wes Craven, Roman Polanski, John Carpenter, and Brian De Palma- counterculture types operating largely outside the confines of Hollywood-revolutionized the genre, exploding taboos and bringing a gritty aesthetic, confrontational style, and political edge to horror. Zinoman recounts how these directors produced such classics as Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween, creating a template for horror that has been imitated relentlessly but whose originality has rarely been matched. This new kind of film dispensed with the old vampires and werewolves and instead assaulted audiences with portraits of serial killers, the dark side of suburbia, and a brand of nihilistic violence that had never been seen before. Shock Value tells the improbable stories behind the making of these movies, which were often directed by obsessive and insecure young men working on shoestring budgets, were funded by sketchy investors, and starred porn stars. But once The Exorcist became the highest grossing film in America, Hollywood took notice. The classic horror films of the 1970s have now spawned a billion-dollar industry, but they have also penetrated deep into the American consciousness. Quite literally, Zinoman reveals, these movies have taught us what to be afraid of. Drawing on interviews with hundreds of the most important artists in horror, Shock Value is an enthralling and personality-driven account of an overlooked but hugely influential golden age in American film.

Book excerpt: The canonical problems of shock-turbulence interaction and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) are central to understanding the hydrodynamic processes involved in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). Over the last few decades, there has been considerable analytical, computational and experimental work on the planar versions of these problems. In spite of the problem of interest being spherical in nature, there have been few studies in any of the three areas for these problems. It is not clear a priori, that the conclusions drawn from planar versions of these problems carry over to the spherical domain. The research presented here represents a first attempt to understand the hydrodynamic processes involved in an Inertial Fusion Engine (IFE) from capsule implosion to interaction of the resulting shock waves with the chamber gases. To abstract the key hydrodynamic components from the complex physics involved in an IFE, three canonical problems are identified and simulated: Interaction of a blast wave with isotropic turbulence, interaction of a converging shock with isotropic turbulence and RMI in spherical geometry. The last problem is a hydrodynamic abstraction of the capsule implosion itself, while the first two problems attempt to model the late stage interaction of fusion induced shock waves with chamber gases. On the shock-turbulence front, the study primarily focuses on the effect of shock strength relative to background turbulence on vorticity dynamics, which forms the cornerstone of any turbulence simulation. The effect of turbulence on shock structure is also characterized. For the converging shock, the maximum compression achieved in presence of turbulence is compared with that for a pure shock. For spherical RMI, focus is on evolution of the mixing layer and growth in vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy for different incident shock Mach numbers. The effect of interface perturbation on maximum compression achieved, which is one of the most important metrics for feasible ICF, is also considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. It constitutes a unique source of knowledge and guidance for all healthcare workers who care for patients with sepsis and septic shock in resource-limited settings. More than eighty percent of the worldwide deaths related to sepsis occur in resource-limited settings in low and middle-income countries. Current international sepsis guidelines cannot be implemented without adaptations towards these settings, mainly because of the difference in local resources and a different spectrum of infectious diseases causing sepsis. This prompted members of the Global Intensive Care working group of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU, Bangkok, Thailand) - among which the Editors – to develop with an international group of experts a comprehensive set of recommendations for the management of sepsis in resource-limited settings. Recommendations are based on both current scientific evidence and clinical experience of clinicians working in resource-limited settings. The book includes an overview chapter outlining the current challenges and future directions of sepsis management as well as general recommendations on the structure and organization of intensive care services in resource-limited settings. Specific recommendations on the recognition and management of patients with sepsis and septic shock in these settings are grouped into seven chapters. The book provides evidence-based practical guidance for doctors in low and middle income countries treating patients with sepsis, and highlights areas for further research and discussion.

Book excerpt: ISO 5349, developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 108, “Mechanical vibration and shock”, is the generic standard for the measurement and assessment of human vibration exposure. Ever since it was originally published in 1986, this standard has been unclear in its assessment of repeated isolated shocks. The current version of ISO 5349-1:2001 states in its scope that the time dependency for human response to repeated shocks is not fully known. Caution is therefore advised in the application of this part of ISO 5349 to such vibration (isolated shocks). In response to an initiative on the part of the ISO/TC 108 Technical Committee, a workshop was held at the 13th International Conference on Hand-Arm Vibration in Beijing in 2015 for the purpose of determining the current state of knowledge concerning exposure to repeated isolated shock vibration caused by machinery and tools and its pathophysiological and epidemiological assessment, and evaluating gaps in knowledge in the interests of future research activity. This report contains the papers presented at the workshop. Part I provides an overview of the results of the workshop and of details of two papers. Part II contains a research report containing background information on two further papers presented at the workshop.

Book excerpt: Working knowledge of the relations of various quantities and their derivatives across a shock wave is useful for any advanced research involving shock waves. Although these relations can be derived in principle by any diligent student of the subject, the derivations are often not trivial, and once derived, neither the approach nor the result can be confidently verified. Comprehensive and analytical, Shock Wave Dynamics: Derivatives and Related Topics includes not only the final results but also the methods, which are of great practical value as examples of mathematical procedure in this field. The book focuses on shock wave derivatives under various conditions and extensively covers shock-generated vorticity, including a novel analysis of triple points. Special care is given to the presentation of assumptions, implementation requirements, and the illustrative examples included for partial verification of the preceding analysis. Designed both as a research monograph and for self study, Shock Wave Dynamics is a complete discussion of shock wave dynamics. An analytical exploration of shock wave phenomena, it will be interesting reading for experts in the field of high-speed gas dynamics. Given today's emphasis on numerical simulation, it will also be of interest to computational engineers as a source for code verification and validation.

Book excerpt: Both experimental and theoretical investigations make it clear that mesoscale materials, that is, materials at scales intermediate between atomic and bulk matter, do not always behave in ways predicted by conventional theories of shock compression. At these scales, shock waves interact with local material properties and microstructure to produce a hierarchy of dissipative structures such as inelastic deformation fields, randomly distributed lattice defects, and residual stresses. A macroscopically steady planar shock wave is neither plane nor steady at the mesoscale. The chapters in this book examine the assumptions underlying our understanding of shock phenomena and present new measurements, calculations, and theories that challenge these assumptions. They address such questions as: - What are the experimental data on mesoscale effects of shocks, and what are the implications? - Can one formulate new mesoscale theories of shock dynamics? - How would new mesoscale theories affect our understanding of shock-induced phase transitions or fracture? - What new computational models will be needed for investigating mesoscale shocks?
