Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep, Farm and Station Management OR many years there has been a demand in sheep-raising F countries for a book that will serve as a guide, philosopher and friend to the man engaged in producing two of the world's staple commodities, wool and meat, and with a view to satisfying the demand I have attempted, in the narrow confines of this volume, to furnish advice on the many questions with which the sheep man is faced in the course of his work. It should be understood that what is written is primarily for the assistance of the beginner although it is hoped that even the man with years of practical experience will find in the following pages some hints or helpful suggestions that were previously outside his knowledge. I have been particularly fortunate in compiling this work in having at my disposal the columns of The Pastoral Review, a publication which, as its name implies, -is devoted to the furtherance of the grazing and farming industries, and whose pages are replete with articles on every conceivable phase of sheep husbandry, written not by professional journalists, but by men who have been through the mill, and whose contributions are based on knowledge acquired during long and practical experience. It is this knowledge that I have endeavoured to put together in con densed and consecutive form, covering the whole field from the taking up of an unimproved block of country and dealing with every phase of station and farm management including construction of improvements choice of breed of sheep - with description of each a brief discussion on wool, every regular operation on a sheep property, such as mating, lambing, marking, classing, shearing, dipping, etc., the diseases of sheep and their treatment, and so on. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep Feeding and Farm Management This book is the result of an original investigation carried on by the author, covering a period of about four years. It is based on farm practices as they occur in the United States, - particularly in the Middle West, - and their relation to the feeding of sheep for market. Its purpose Is to furnish to those interested in the feeding of sheep for market, whether students or farmers, the information that will enable them to carry on the necessary operations profitably. The student desiring to inform himself regarding the most modern and profitable methods for buying, feeding, and marketing sheep, instinctively turns to the literature on the subject. Save for a few bulletins on experimental sheep feeding, he finds that the field has been practically untouched. He sees in our agricultural press frequent reports and comments that seem to point to this phase of farming as not only profitable but also sound, and advisable from the standpoint of the economical use of crops, the conservation of soil fertility, and the saving of labor. Naturally he desires a reliable and practical source of information on the subject. Hence to the student the author would commend these pages, trusting that in their study he will find the answers to his questions, and fact and plans that will aid him in his future farm operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keeping Sheep for Profit This Correspondence Course on Keeping Sheep for Profit describes conditions and Opportunities in New York State conforming so closely to those in many parts of Canada, that the text is reprinted for use among Canadian Soldiers, without change.to be a profitable one. Sheep husbandry should have a profitable place in the management of many eastern farms. Good sheep were common on eastern farms a generation ago, when in Spite of lower prices they proved worth keeping. With the passing of the western range competition, there is a growing interest in sheep for many run-down farms in the East. Success with sheep consists of more than buying a flock and placing it on the farm. To be successful, the shepherd must know the habits and characteristics of his flock and be quick to interpret the unfailing signs of disorder or health. The ability to look beneath the exterior for evidences of thrift or disorder is essential with all livestock, and constitutes one of the essentials of a successful shepherd. Book excerpt: “The value of this book cannot be overstated. As a student, many years ago, there were no comprehensive textbooks on sheep medicine, so I was lucky to have Professor Kym A Abbott as an inspiring lecturer. This book is needed by students!” Following on from Professor Abbott's first book, The Practice of Sheep Veterinary Medicine, this new text remains the ideal reference for veterinarians in farm animal practice, veterinary and animal science students, agriculturalists and sheep producers. Principally addressing sheep health, welfare and production matters in Australia, this book also covers issues that are of relevance in many other countries of the world where sheep are raised. Sheep veterinary specialist Professor Kym Abbott and his co-authors inform the reader of the science underpinning the occurrence of disease syndromes, giving special attention to commonly investigated problems related to nutrition, reproduction and helminthiasis. Other disease conditions of sheep are discussed in subsequent chapters; first on the basis of presenting signs in the case of lameness and sudden death – conditions in which signs can be attributed to disorders of a variety of body systems – and then on a body-systems basis. This new edition thoroughly revises and expands on the previous text, adding a review of the systems and strategies available to improve the welfare of sheep in extensive farming systems, a chapter on pain relief, analgesia and anaesthesia for sheep, and a chapter on metacestodes. The text is illustrated with more than 150 full-colour images and photographs.
