Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and Shorthand Heywood had written for the stage in 1596, and in the Introduction to The Fair Maid of the West Mr. Collier says - No author of the time has more reason to complain of the pirating and surreptitious printing of his works (than Heywood). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Shakespeare The following tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in and in Whatever has been added to them to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote. It is my wish that the true plays of Shakespeare may prove to you in older years, enrichers of the fancy, strengtheners of virtue, a withdrawing from all selfish and mercenary thought, a lesson of sweet and honorable thought and actions, to teach you courtesy, benignity, generosity, humanity for of examples, teaching these virtues, his pages are full - Mary Lamb. Book excerpt: The year 2008 marked the four hundredth anniversary of the first publication ofKing Lear, and for four centuries the play has remained a consummate bibliographical mystery. The earliest quarto (1608) prints apparent nonsense and seemingly insoluble cruxes.Shakespeare in Shorthand solves the textual puzzle and shows that many textual anomalies derive from the play's transcription in Elizabethan shorthand. The shorthand system of John Willis,Stenographie, first published in 1602, shows a high correlation with the unusual orthography and textual features of theLear quarto. This book, which was the 2007 winner of the Jay L. Halio Prize in Shakespeare and Early Modern Studies, combines textual and bibliographical analysis with a cultural history of early modern stenography and an examination of shorthand sermons to show that knowledge of shorthand can clarify the textual interrelation of the quarto and folio versions ofLear. Some textual differences that are often ascribed to authorial revision are shown to derive instead from processes of transcription and transmission in abbreviated writing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Shakespeare: The Tragedy of Hamlet This edition Of Hamlet aims in the first place at giving a trustworthy text. Secondly, it attempts to exhibit the variations from that text which are found in the primary sources - the Quarto of I 604 and the Folio of I 62 3 - in so far as those variations are of importance towards the ascertainment Of the text. Every variation is not recorded, but I have chosen to err on the side Of excess rather than on that of defect. Readings from the Quarto Of 1603 are occa sionally given, and also from the later Quartos and Folios, but to record such readings is not a part of the design Of this edition. The letter Q means Quarto 1604; F means Folio 1623. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
