Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful book, which is a revisionist math history as well as a revisionist art history, Tony Robbin, well known for his innovative computer visualizations of hyperspace, investigates different models of the fourth dimension and how these are applied in art and physics. Robbin explores the distinction between the slicing, or Flatland, model and the projection, or shadow, model. He compares the history of these two models and their uses and misuses in popular discussions. Robbin breaks new ground with his original argument that Picasso used the projection model to invent cubism, and that Minkowski had four-dimensional projective geometry in mind when he structured special relativity. The discussion is brought to the present with an exposition of the projection model in the most creative ideas about space in contemporary mathematics such as twisters, quasicrystals, and quantum topology. Robbin clarifies these esoteric concepts with understandable drawings and diagrams. Robbin proposes that the powerful role of projective geometry in the development of current mathematical ideas has been long overlooked and that our attachment to the slicing model is essentially a conceptual block that hinders progress in understanding contemporary models of spacetime. He offers a fascinating review of how projective ideas are the source of some of today’s most exciting developments in art, math, physics, and computer visualization.

Book excerpt: Christmas Day, 3:00 a.m., December 25, 2015 The final chapter in man’s search for truth began with a single event that took place in the wee hours of Christmas morning, 2015. A crippling blizzard of epic proportion had blanketed the entire northeastern corridor with an opaque shroud of ice and wind-driven snow. All ground and air transportation was at a complete standstill as residents throughout the Atlantic coastal area hunkered down in their homes awaiting a reprieve from nature’s fury. This explains why Ray Hodges was fast asleep at his desk in the air traffic control tower of Dulles International Airport. After doing absolutely nothing for the past six hours, he was bored stiff and had planned to rest his eyes for only a moment. Forty-five minutes later, Hodges was awakened by a high-pitched alarm warning him of an incoming bogey. The aircraft’s radar signature was that of a TWA Constellation, a prop-driven plane that he had not seen since the early 1960s. The anonymous intruder was flying dangerously close to the high value targets in Washington DC, and Hodges was required to establish immediate radio contact with the inbound aircraft. Using multiple radio frequencies, he tried to hail the pilot, with no response. This perilous situation prompted an urgent call to the Strategic Air Command at Andrews Air Base, and within minutes of notification, a squadron of F18 jets had surrounded the aircraft. The team leader contacted Hodges and reported that he too was unable to communicate with the pilot. Then the pilot said something that made Hodges’s skin crawl. “Dulles, there seems to be multiple objects protruding through the fuselage of the plane. Understand the visibility up here is marginal, but those objects look a lot like body parts.” Hodges instantly felt a gnawing pain centered in the pit of his stomach. Thus began one young man’s journey into the crypts of the unknown. It was a place where all reality was an illusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly “Top 10 Book of the Year” selection “Begins as entertaining slapstick, subtly metamorphoses into fable. . . . As [the narrator’s] vivid imaginary world fuses with reality this deceptively ethereal novel advances toward a dark and startling finale.” —Wall Street Journal Laid off from his job, Damián Lobo obsessively imagines himself as a celebrity being interviewed on TV. After committing an act of petty theft at an antiques market, he finds himself trapped inside a wardrobe and delivered to the seemingly idyllic home of a husband, wife, and their internet-addicted teenage daughter. There, he sneaks from the shadows to serve as an invisible butler, becoming deeply and disastrously involved with his unknowing host family. Every thread of the plot is ingeniously tied together, creating a potent admixture of parable, love story, and thriller. Millás masterfully reveals the everyday as innately surreal as he renders the unbelievable tangible and the trivial fantastical, and full of dark humor. Juan José Millás is the recipient of Spain’s most prestigious literary prizes: the Premio Nadal, Premio Planeta, and Premio Nacional de Narrativa. A regular contributor to El País, Millás has also won many awards for his journalism. He is the author of several short story collections and works of nonfiction as well as over a dozen novels, including From the Shadows, the first of his novels to be published in North America. He lives in Madrid.

But when a mysterious and enigmatic time traveler arrives in his shop, Joe learns that his first trip was just the beginning and this time, the rules of the game have changed. Blackmailed into accepting a new mission, Joe is flung back to 1960s London where he comes face-to-face with a ruthless gangster and witnesses the brutal murder of an innocent woman. Joe knows better than most that death can be reversed and the final chapter is sometimes where the story actually begins. Emotionally involved, he has no choice but to act, and quickly. With the help of Vinny, his vinyl-loving sidekick, Joe once again sets out to change the course of history. Sounds simple enough ... but when it comes to time travel, nothing is ever as it seems. Who is the old time traveler working for? And who decides what can and can’t be changed? In a thrilling twist, Joe discovers that the victim is critically important to the future, and what starts out as a straightforward mission soon becomes a race to unravel a mystery—one that threatens the very timeline he fought so hard to protect. Joe must dig deeper than ever, master his newfound skills, and save the woman before the past catches up with him for good. Turns out time doesn’t heal after all. It just adds salt.

Book excerpt: In this original, wide-ranging, and endlessly thought-provoking work of popular nonfiction, a leading science writer uncovers the pervasive presence of shadows in our world. For Plato, shadows were the symbol of our limitations. For Galileo, they knocked the Earth from the center of the cosmos. They are a source of fear and a symbol of ignorance, and they loom large in art and design, mythology and folklore, physics and metaphysics, and architecture and urban planning. From shadows puppets and the psychology of shadows to the role of shadows in astronomy and the influence of shadows on the architectural profiles of our cities, Roberto Casati awakens our fascination in this tour-de-force of investigation and imagination.
