Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade Trees for North Carolina Shade trees should be regarded as a necessity on the streets of the cities and towns of North Carolina. They lessen the heat and glare of the long hot summer days without checking the cooling southern breezes, and filter from the air a large portion of the dust which rises from the streets and roads. Nor must their aesthetic qualities be overlooked. Towns fortunate enough to have shaded parks and streets bordered with neatly kept rows of trees possess an intrinsic asset. Many towns in North Caro lina derive a large portion of their income from summer or winter visitors and the street tree contributes not a little to producing the conditions most agreeable to these guests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trees of North Carolina In the preparation of this little book the authors have had in mind the need of a simple treatment of the trees of North Carolina for the use of any one who may be interested in them. Until now there has been no publication even approximating this character except Dr. Curtis' Woody Plants of North Carolina a valuable work, but long since out of print and out of date, and Bulletin N o. 6 of the North Carolina Geological Survey by Pinchot and Ashe which is also out of print. The Woods and Timbers of North Carolina, by P. M. Hale was a republication of the reports of Dr. Curtis and others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Forest Trees of North Carolina, How to Know Them: A Pocket Manual Trees are the largest and oldest of living creatures. They are in one way or another perhaps more closely associated with our own daily lives than is any other class of living things, yet most of us know less about them and can hardly even tell one kind of tree from another. It is hoped that this book will furnish in formation which will enable even the child to know our common trees at Sight, and will stimulate so great an interest in the life and habits of these forest friends that all North Carolinians may learn to appreciate, foster and protect the great heritage of our trees. In using this book it should be borne in mind that nearly two-thirds of the area of our State is still classed as forest land; that much of this has had the greater part or all of the merchantable timber cut from it; that there IS practically no more virgin forest; and that in most areas the second crop of timber is less in quantity and inferior in quality to the'origi'nal forest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loblolly or North Carolina Pine Loblolly combines all the essentials for an ideal forest management tree. It seeds profusely and regenerates readily, is adapted to nearly all types of soil, grows rapidly, becomes marketable at an early age, grows densely, making large yields per acre, and produces material for which there is a general demand at a fair and increasing price. The study Of the loblolly or North Carolina pine in eastern North Carolina, which formed the basis of this report, was made jointly by the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture and the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey. The first field work was begun in 1898 and the entire study completed in 1913. The growth and volume figures apply only to eastern North Carolina. The mill studies were made in Gates, Wayne, Beaufort, and Pitt counties; and the sample plots and stem analyses were made in twelve additional counties: Chatham, Nash, Northampton, Washington, Bertie, Craven, Hyde, Harnett, Johnston, Wake, Pender, Lenoir, and Onslow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Fires: Their Destructive Work, Causes and Prevention Nothing better illustrates the state of public Opinion in North Carolina on the subject of forest fires than that the fact that the State law prohibiting such fires, except under certain conditions, has remained on the statute books practically unchanged and unenforced for more than a century. And nothing more forcibly illustrates the destructive work of these fires than the fact that whereas the long-leaf pine, which has for so long a time supplied both lumber and naval store products, a century ago was a com mon tree throughout the whole of eastern North Carolina, now it is almost unknown north of the Neuse river; and south of this river, at its present rate of destruction, in two decades more it will cease to be a tree of economic importance. Of course the lumbermen have made great inroads on the long-leaf pine forests. But even of the full grown trees the fires have destroyed more than the lumbermen have cut; and so completely have these fires destroyed the voung growth of long-leaf pine that in many counties scarcely a specimen can now be found to indicate where once grew valuable forests of this tree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a wintry night in 1831, a man named Charlie Silver was murdered with an axe and his body burned in a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. His young wife, Frankie Silver, was tried and hanged for the crime. In later years people claimed that a tree growing near the ruins of the old cabin was cursed--that anyone who climbed into it would be unable to get out. Daniel Patterson uses this "accurst" tree as a metaphor for the grip the story of the murder has had on the imaginations of the local community, the wider world, and the noted Appalachian traditional singer and storyteller Bobby McMillon. For nearly 170 years, the memory of Frankie Silver has been kept alive by a ballad and local legends and by the news accounts, fiction, plays, and other works they inspired. Weaving Bobby McMillon's personal story--how and why he became a taleteller and what this story means to him--into an investigation of the Silver murder, Patterson explores the genesis and uses of folklore and the interplay between folklore, social and personal history, law, and narrative as people and communities try to understand human character and fate. Bobby McMillon is a furniture and hospital worker in Lenoir, North Carolina, with deep roots in Appalachia and a lifelong passion for learning and performing traditional songs and tales. He has received a North Carolina Folk Heritage Award from the state's Arts Council and also the North Carolina Folklore Society's Brown-Hudson Folklore Award.
