Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of sexual behaviour has been notoriously neglected in social research and there has been no major survey of sexual behaviour since the Kinsey report in the late 1950s. Various social and health problems, including the AIDS epidemic and the increase in teenage pregnancies have recently underlined the need for an up to date and authoritative analysis of current sexual behaviour. Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles is the result of a major statistical survey of the sexual behaviours and attitudes of 20,000 UK citizens, collected by written questionnaires and face to face interviews. It is the most comprehensive and up to date source of information on human sexual behaviour available and the first official UK-based resource ever published.

This was to provide data to help predict and prevent the transmission and spread of HIV, in response to the critical need for information on the AIDS epidemic. Set up by biomedical and social scientists, NATSAL-1 was carried out in 1990, and the results used for AIDS projections and the national HIV and sexual health strategy. Subsequent surveys (NATSAL-2 and -3) have followed in 2000 and 2010 extending the objectives to include other sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia and Human Papillomavirus. Introduced by Professor Clive Seale, this volume focusses primarily on NATSAL-1 and addresses the background to the survey, the methodology, the results, and the funding: its initial support by the Department of Health, the dramatic withdrawal of government funds and subsequent funding by the Wellcome Trust. Contributors include many of the key people involved in setting up the survey, experts in public and sexual health, individuals from the Wellcome Trust, interviewers, and the Sunday Times journalist who, in September 1989, reported Margaret Thatcher's veto of Government support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the changing role of sexuality in American life! This helpful book offers a solid background in the sociology of family life and personal sexuality. Marital and Sexual Lifestyles in the United States: Attitudes, Behaviors, and Relationships in Social Context is designed to give readers a broad view of the diversity of contemporary U. S. attitudes, behaviors, and relationships. It also covers basic sociological concepts and research methods. Most human sexuality texts focus on the individual, whereas texts designed for sociology courses on the family downplay individual sexual expression. Marital and Sexual Lifestyles in the United Statesintegrates the two approaches. The choices of the individual take on additional meaning when seen within a unified historical, statistical, and conceptual framework. Marital and Sexual Lifestyles in the United States gives readers the tools to consider such pressing issues as: Does the divorce rate mean that the institution of marriage is in trouble? Are children's futures impaired if they come from single-parent households? Should same-sex couples be allowed to marry? How does marriage differ from cohabitation? What are the real sexual differences between the genders? What is sexual morality? How much confidence can we place in studies of human sexuality by such social scientists as Alfred Kinsey and Masters and Johnson? These questions and others like them are placed in the context of U. S. social trends, beginning with the 1950s and moving toward today. Plentifully illustrated with tables, charts, and figures that show where we are going as well as where we have been, Marital and Sexual Lifestyles in the United States gives a clear perspective on relationships in social context.

Deaths related to AIDS have driven down the life expectancy rate of residents in Zambia, Kenya, and Uganda with far-reaching implications. This book details the current state of the AIDS epidemic in Africa and what is known about the behaviors that contribute to the transmission of the HIV infection. It lays out what research is needed and what is necessary to design more effective prevention programs.
