Book excerpt: Some people will tell you that it is difficult to identify the sex of an Asian Arowana and that you won't know the sex until it either starts to lay eggs or mouth-broods the young. Is That Really True ?The answer is NO. For most species of animals on this planet, there are differences in appearance and physical traits that will tell the two sexes apart. For some species, the differences are obvious but for some others, and arowana is one of them, they are more subtle. Nonetheless, the differences are there. You just need to know where to look for them. This book, SEXING ASIAN AROWANA will give you eight visual criteria to identify the sex of any Asian arowana, young fry or adult alike, regardless of the color strains. Also given are 27 pictorial examples of arowanas for the readers to practice what they have learnt in identifying the sexes, with guidance and answers given. After reading this book, you will become an expert in this field in no time at all. Why, you may ask. Because it is easy to do if someone just tells you the clue, which very few people actually notice on this fish, and which you may never find out if nobody tells you.. Clue: The sex of this creature can be found written on its face, even when it is a fry! The stomach and vent area of an adult fish is also a giveaway, which is the eight sexing method I had added in, that is not in the earlier edition. This book will tell you the detail. I had changed this paperback book to color print. In the earlier version of this book, I had wrongly selected black and white print, which is not suitable for this visually technical book. My apology to earlier reader and buyer.

Book excerpt: The Arowana is the world's most costly aquarium fish. It is a tropical freshwater fish from the brackish swamps of Asia, the river basins of South America, and the pools and billabongs of Austrailia. There are numerous types of Arowanas, most of which can easily grow up to three feet long. This fish is a savage predator that's been around since the age of the dinosaurs and has remained unchanged, which is why some people call these fish "living fossils." The Arowana is prized for its unique metallic scales; the bristles that bulge from its jaw; and its undulating movements as it swims, which are reminiscent of the paper serpents you might find in a Chinese New Year's parade. In fact, the similarities between the Arowana and the dragon of Chinese lore have given rise to the belief that the fish brings good fortune and success. For all of these reasons, the Arowana has become one of the most coveted aquarium fish in the world. The situation of the Arowana is very unique: nearly extinct in the wild, Arowanas have actually seen an increase in reproduction in recent years as they're bred by the thousands on farms for the aquarium trade. The Arowana's declining population and subsequent resurgence is a direct result of the conservation movement of the last several decades -- but not in the way you might think. In the 1970s, when the international community started to organize around the idea of ensuring imperiled species were protected, the idea was to boycott the exchange of all potentially endangered species, including the Asian Arowana. In those days the Arowana was considered a food fish, and not an especially prized one. Although the interest in Arowanas was relatively minimal at that point, the fish is an apex predator in its ecosystem and a moderate-reproducing species, so it wound up on the list of protected species and was banned from international exchange. This effort at conservation backfired, and spectacularly: once a relatively unpopular food fish, when the Arowana became a restricted species, the interest in it as an aquarium fish spiked. Suddenly, the fish was in high demand as a status symbol, and those in the aquarium trade were eager to breed and raise as many Arowanas as they could for sale. This brings us to where we are today, with certain prized specimens of Arowana being sold for an astonishing $400,000 each What makes this fish so special? We'll discuss the myths, legends, types, costs, and care requirements for the incredibly unique and highly sought-after Arowana.

WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE A LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST SCIENCE BOOK OF THE YEAR “[A] curiously edifying book.” —The New York Times Book Review “With the taut suspense of a spy novel, Voigt paints a vivid world of murder, black market deals, and habitat destruction surrounding a fish that's considered, ironically, to be a good-luck charm.” —Discover “[An] immensely satisfying story, full of surprises and suspense....Things get weird fast.” —The Wall Street Journal An intrepid journalist’s quest to find a wild Asian arowana—the world’s most expensive aquarium fish—takes her on a global tour in this “engaging tale of obsession and perseverance…and an enthralling look at the intersection of science, commercialism, and conservationism” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). A young man is murdered for his pet fish. An Asian tycoon buys a single specimen for $150,000. Meanwhile, a pet detective chases smugglers through the streets of New York. With “the taut suspense of a spy novel” (Discover) The Dragon Behind the Glass tells the story of a fish like none other. Treasured as a status symbol believed to bring good luck, the Asian arowana, or “dragon fish,” is a dramatic example of a modern paradox: the mass-produced endangered species. While hundreds of thousands are bred in captivity, the wild fish as become a near-mythical creature. From the South Bronx to Borneo and beyond, journalist Emily Voigt follows the trail of the arowana to learn its fate in nature. “A fresh, lively look at an obsessive desire to own a piece of the wild” (Kirkus Reviews), The Dragon Behind the Glass traces our fascination with aquarium fish back to the era of exploration when naturalists stood on the cutting edge of modern science. In an age when freshwater fish now comprise one of the most rapidly vanishing groups of animals, Voigt unearths a surprising truth behind the arowana’s rise to fame—one that calls into question how we protect the world’s rarest species. “Not since Candace Millard published The River of Doubt has the world of the Amazon, Borneo, Myanmar, and other exotic locations been so colorfully portrayed as it is now in Emily Voigt’s The Dragon Behind the Glass…a must-read” (Library Journal, starred review).

Building upon the previous two editions of Aquaculture and Fisheries Biotechnology: Genetic Approaches, this 3rd edition offers a presentation of traditional selective breeding, modern genetic biotechnology, genomics, gene transfer and gene editing, and the latest developments in genetic biotechnology such as epigenetics, xenogenesis and genome-wide association study coupled with commercial application, the impact of government regulation and expectations for the future. It provides a firm grounding in relevant aspects of classical genetics, before focusing on particular aspects such as sex reversal and breeding as applied in aquaculture and fisheries. It also explores how more recent molecular genetics, genomics and biotechnology techniques can be used and combined in improvement programmes for fish and aquaculture species. A glossary explains the latest terminology used in biotechnology and genetics. This book will be useful for research scientists and students in marine biotechnology, aquaculture biotechnology, and fish genetics and breeding.
