Harvey (also a Gloucestershire lad) Miss Marion Scott, whose criticism has been so useful, and she so kind, in spite of my continued refusal to alter a word of anything the Vicar of Twigworth Herbert Howells (and this is not the last time you will hear of him) Mr. Hilaire Belloc, whose Path to Rome has been my trench companion, with The Spirit of Man Mr. Wilfred Gibson, author of Friends, a great little book many others also, including Shakespeare and Bach, both friends of mine; and, last but not least, my comrades of two platoons of the Gloucesters, who so often have wondered whether I were crazy or not. Let them draw their own conclusions now, for the writing of this book it was that so distracted me. This is a long list, and even now does not include old Mrs. Poyner, who was so jolly and long-suffering. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Somme to the Rhine At last I have got back to France. As a result of my labours at the Staff School, I have returned as a regimental officer on staff probation, which means that I shall have to undergo periods of attachment to various units in the field before receiving an appointment. We crossed from Folkestone to Boulogne in the s.s. Victoria, one of a convoy of three fast Channel steamers. On our port bow were a destroyer and a large motor patrol boat, on our starboard side a second destroyer; several s.s. airships flew overhead, and as the sea was calm and the weather fine the crossing was most enjoyable. The military landing officer at Boulogne told me that I was posted to the 58th (London) Division, and should get further orders from the commandant of St. Martin's Camp in the morning. This is a pleasant surprise because my brother Percy is Brigade Major of the 175th Brigade in the 58th Division. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford English Literary History is the new century's definitive account of a rich and diverse literary heritage that stretches back for a millennium and more. Each of these groundbreaking volumes offers a leading scholar's considered assessment of the authors, works, cultural traditions, events, and the ideas that shaped the literary voices of their age. The series will enlighten and inspire not only everyone studying, teaching, and researching in English Literature, but all serious readers. This exciting new volume provides a freshly inclusive account of literature in England in the period before, during, and after the First World War. Chris Baldick places the modernist achievements of Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce within the rich context of non-modernist writings across all major genres, allowing 'high' literary art to be read against the background of 'low' entertainment. Looking well beyond the modernist vanguard, Baldick highlights the survival and renewal of realist traditions in these decades of post-Victorian disillusionment. Ranging widely across psychological novels, war poems, detective stories, satires, and children's books, The Modern Movement provides a unique survey of the literature of this turbulent time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Peter Jackson’s cinematic hobbits set forth, 3-Minute Tolkien celebrates the enduring influence of the world’s most revered fantasy writer. It offers a readable, absorbing structure, dividing J.R.R. Tolkien’s life and cultural contribution into 60 neat portions, every one digestible in a mere three minutes: 20 mini-sections each on Life, Work and Influence. From a childhood inventing new languages in the sylvan landscape of the Severn valley, through a First World War that saw him witness the horrors of the Somme, to academic success founded on a passion for Old English tales, we trace Tolkien’s life and look at the way in which it informs his creation of imaginary worlds so intricately mapped that modern readers, writers and artists continue to explore them in a quest for their myths, monsters and meaning.
