Book excerpt: Stop looking at life as a spectator sport. It doesn't matter your age; jump in wherever you are. As youngsters we had dreams, whether it was going off to some exotic far away place or finally having the guts to introduce yourself to someone you always admired. Most of us still have wishes and dreams lying dormant in our lives. Oftentimes we think we're too busy or we don't have the money. It seems we've always got an excuse. Our time for excuses is running shorter each day, there's no better time than now to do what we've always dreamed about. The movie "Bucket List", premiering in December of 2007, with those great actors Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, seemed to wake many of us. The main plot follows two terminally ill men on their road trip with a wish list of things to do before they "kick the bucket". Ultimately both got their zest in life back as a consequence. We're no different. It's time to reclaim our lives. If you feel like you've been in a rut or that you've become too boring, creating a bucket list - then doing something about it - may be just the thing for you. Writing down your actual bucket list increases the likelihood that you'll one day put a check mark by it to fulfill your goal. I've learned that a significant item on my own personal bucket list is to make a difference in the lives of others. I seek to inspire and help others discover deeper into their own lives to finally attain what many times they didn't even realize they were subconsciously desiring. Others have inspired me. Why not return the favor? I believe that life is much like our going to visit the Big Top of the grand circus when it comes town. We can hardly wait for the event. The day finally comes. Our excitement is wonderful. As we arrive, ten dollars in hand, we're attracted to all the various sideshows outside the big top. Each costs 50 cents here and 50 cents there. Finally hours later, after wasting away our money and our excitement with trivial things, we're ready to enter the big top but our money has been spent. We've whittled away our time, our energy, without ever experiencing the bigger, more grand opportunity of participating in the reason we came to the circus in the first place. Life is no different. Are you missing out on the Big Top in your life - the reason and desire of doing all you are capable of? Chuck Pyle, the singer and songwriter said it best "You've heard of the near death experience. I've heard of people who have had a near life experience." What's on your bucket list? Norm will help you explore not only what's on your list, but assist you in finally writing it down and getting the process going. Life can be great, now it's time to do something about it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you've always suspected the universe was out to get you... you were right! Yes, the universe we live in is cosmically beautiful and mysterious and all that crap. But it's also a bit of an asshole. After all, remember that you are just a group of atoms structured in a specific way for barely long enough to try to understand this thing we call existence. Those atoms could just have easily been used to make the dog shit you're cleaning off your shoe or the mold that grows on your bread! The fact is, when you zoom out to look at the universe and how it functions, you'll see that it's usually not in our favor, and many of the laws of physics are actively working against our survival. In this book, you'll discover why: You're an aging mutant Invisible rays are melting our genetic code The Earth is covered in explosive pimples Literally everything is poisonous And more true and terrifying scientific facts! But don't worry! While it's true that there are (at least) forty-two grudges to hold against the universe, the good news is that there is also one very good reason to forgive them all and embrace the wild, improbable fact that we are alive (for now) and we should take advantage of it while we can. 42 Reasons to Hate the Universe (And One Reason Not To) is a hilarious, no-holds-barred exploration of all the reasons we shouldn't exist—but somehow do anyway. Rooted in scientific research but written simply so that evolved apes such as ourselves can understand where the heck we came from and where we're likely going, this book is for all the nerds and nihilists who know they're going down in the end but want to enjoy the rollercoaster ride of existence on the way.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Book excerpt: My new friends have begun to suspect I haven’t told them the full story of my life. “Why did you leave Sierra Leone?” “Because there is a war.” “You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?” “Yes, all the time.” “Cool.” I smile a little. “You should tell us about it sometime.” “Yes, sometime.” This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. In A Long Way Gone, Beah, now twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he’d been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

Book excerpt: A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three. Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing. The Things They Carried won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
