Seedling survival after outplanting can be improved by using high-quality seedling material. Seedling quality consists of several features, such as genetic source, morphological properties, nutritional status, stress resistance, and vitality of the seedlings. Field performance of the seedlings is a complex process which can be affected by many nursery and silvicultural practices. Nursery cultural practices strongly affect seedling quality, which is generally at its highest level during the growth period at the nursery. Afterwards, when the seedlings are transported from the nursery to the planting site (including seedling storage, handling, shipping, and planting practices), the quality of seedlings can only remain the same or decline. To ensure successful regeneration, it is important to produce seedlings that retain their high quality until planting, and to establish them quickly in the forest regeneration site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vegetable Seedling Production Manual is a technical paper in the series of the FAO Horticultural Crops Group, Crop and Grassland Service, Plant Production and Protection Division. The document was prepared to emphasize the importance of high-quality and true-to-type seedling as a component of integrated production and pest management (IPPM) for increased crop productivity. The text reviews the current technologies for the production of healthy and vigorous transplants including the use of available local materials and substrates. The manual aim at disseminating vegetable seedlings production technology as a means of improving cost-effectiveness in vegetable nursery management and promoting the use of improved vegetable cultivars.

Book excerpt: Forest plantations are among the tangible solutions to meet the world's needs for timber and wood products (e.g., timber, firewood, pulp, and paper) and other ecosystem services that are constantly increasing and compensate for the loss of millions of hectares of forests caused by the increase in the severity and frequency of fires, insect attacks, and environmental stresses in humid, arid, and semiarid zones. Faced with these major constraints and challenges in the context of climate change, it is not enough to plant millions of seedlings, but we must ensure the genetic selection of seeds adapted to current and future climates, the morphophysiological quality of seedlings, the quality of sites, and the optimization of cultural as well as sylvicultural practices (e.g., from seeds to sustainable plantations) to achieve the objectives of various programs (reforestation and wood production; restoration of damaged, degraded, or destroyed ecosystems; desert greening; and agroforestry) in terms of survival, growth, and yield. This Special Issue deals with different facets and topics of the seedling production chain in different countries and continents, from growing media to planting performance related to reforestation, restoration, and agroforestry programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Regeneration Manual presents state-of-the-art information about current regeneration practices for southern pines in the United States. Over 1.2 billion seedlings of five major species -- loblolly, slash, longleaf, sand, and shortleaf -- are planted each year. In 22 chapters, the Manual details fundamental steps in establishing successful young pine plantations: regeneration planning, including economic and legal aspects; regeneration harvest methods; propagation by seed and vegetative techniques; bareroot and container seedling culturing in the nursery; measures of seedling quality; site potential; -- environment, associated vegetation, soils; matching species to sites; site preparation -- mechanical and chemical methods, fire, fertilization; seedling handling before planting; planting practices and measures of regeneration success; promoting early plantation growth and management of competing vegetation, insects, disease, and wildlife.
