Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed Identification Manual is an attempt to meet the long-standing need for a reference work dealing exclusively with seed identification. The authors of this manual have brought together, for direct observation and study on a comparative basis, pictures and practical descriptions of a large and representative a collection of seeds. In accord with the visual principal, the textual part of the manual is ample illustrated with 288 figures in the form of line drawings and diagrams, and the generic descriptions are accompanied by reference to the corresponding plates. Lavishly illustrated the pictorial part of the manual, containing 824 photographic plates, showing the seeds of more than 600 plant species, is divided into three habitat classification of Framlands, Wetlands and Woodlands from various parts of the United States. The immediate aim of this manual is to help agriculturists, foresters, wildlife biologists, chemical manufacturers, agricultural experiment stations, seed testing laboratories, and others interested in the land-use programs to identify the seeds in their particular ecological fields of interest. Bearing in mind the different backgrounds of the probable readers of this manual in respect to scientific preparations and experiences, the authors have thought it best to keep the descriptions nontechnical, so far as was feasible, and thus adapt the material to a broad range of interests and skills.

Methods and equipment requiring further research are highlighted. Operating and management problems of processing -seed in tropical areas are described. Ways in which viability losses can be reduced in open or naturally ventilated seed stores are described. Methods of protecting seed from insect attack and testing seeds of tropical crops for many seed-borne diseases are discussed. Marketing and promotion requirements, methods, agencies and channels are diagrammed. Two alternatives are described for established a seed testing station in tropical areas: Seed - lab 2000, that can test 2000 samples/ year and Seed - lab 5000 that can test 5000 samples/year. A list of books and journals for a basic seed testing library is appended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed is common fundamental to the production of all crops. Though many books have been written about the importance of using seed which is viable and free from weed seeds and diseases. The necessity is felt for the need to preserve the generic quality of seed during multiplications. Wigh the production of ever more sophisticated cultivars the work of the seed producer becomes of increasing importance. High seed yields are not enough in temselves and we need to arrange production in such a way that the qualities which give each cultivar a special place in agricultural production are preserved from one generation to the next. The book mainly emphasis on the precutions which the seed producer should take to ensure the production of good quality seed in the widest sense. The author studied the various problems, beginning with the definition of a cultivar and ending with stored seed ready for planting. This book is essentially practical, contins enough basic information to enable reader to understand the reasons behind the management practices which are descibed. It is hoped that the book will be useful to those who are involved in agricultural education, crop production into seed production, to extnesion workers and administration in seed programmers and to the practical seed producers.

This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allelopathy is a new field of science, as the term Allelopathy was coined by Prof. Hans Molisch, a German Plant Physiologist in 1937. However, no standard methods are being used by various workers due to lack of compendium on the Techniques, hence, the results obtained are not easily comparable with each others. Till now lot of allelopathy resech has been done in various fields of Agricultural and Plant Sciences. However, there is no compilation of various Research Methods used. Every scientist is conducting research in his own way. It is causing lot of problems to researchers working in underdeveloped/Third World Countries in small towns without Library facilities. Therefore, to make available the standard methods for conducting allelopathy research independently, this multi-volume book has been planned. Since allelopathy is multi-disciplinary area of research, hence, volumes have been planned for each discipline. Prof. S.S. Narwal has planned this multi-volume Book Research Methods in Plant Sciences : Allelopathy. Three volumes (Volume 1. Soil Analysis, Volume 2. Plant Protection and Volume 3. Plant Pathogens) of this Book were released during the IV. International Allelopathy Conference, August 23-25, 2004 at Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar-125004, India. Volumes 4. Plant Analysis and Volume 5. Plant Physiology will be released in November, 2006. Three volumes (Volume 6. Cell Diagnostics, Volume 7. Chemistry Methods and Volume 8. Weed Studies) are under preparation. This volume of 28 Chapters, is divided into 7 Sections. Section I. Seed Physiology, includes 5 chapters describing the structure of seed, optimum conditions for seed germination, physiological and biochemical changes at cellular level. Section II. Growth and Development, describes leaf area, growth indices, senescence and abscission. Allelochemicals, present in soil or plant, can create chemical stress which may change the plant water status, plasma membrane properties, chlorophyll stability and waxes present on the organ surface. Methods to determine all these parameters are described in next 4 chapters in Section III. Stress Physiology. These sites can be explored by estimating chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosystems I and II activity, carbon dioxide exchange rate, activity of CO2 fixing enzymes, intermediate metabolite level, photosynthate partitioning, respiration and finally the crop growth dynamics. Methods to determine extent of all these sites are explained in 7 chapters in Section IV. Gas Exchange Processes. The main cause of changed physiological process is at the gene level, for which estimation of nucleic acids is very critical. It is briefly explained in section V. Biochemical Estimation. Section VI. Microtomy and Histochemistry, has 7 chapters. Basic procedure to process the test plant material for microtomy, use of light and electron microscopy to study cellular changes, measurement of cellular dimensions, stomatal index and frequency, pollen viability and in vivo pollen germination and histochemical localization of important enzymes and metabolites are the core topics. Currently, tissue cultures are commonly used to study the precise effect of allelochemicals on callus growth and differentiation. To achieve these objectives techniques of tissue cultures is described under section VI. Tissue Culture.
