Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Christian mystical tradition a relic of another time, shaped by celibates for celibates, unable to engage meaningfully with people of our time who embrace their corporeality and sexuality as crucial aspects of their journey towards union with God? This book reflects in serious theological depth and detail on the spiritual and sexual journeys of gay men of mature and committed Christian faith, employing the Christian mystical tradition as the lens and the interlocutor in this process. This study examines the major themes and stages of the mystical tradition as outlined by Evelyn Underhill, but also including more recent work by Ruth Burrows, Thomas Merton and Constance Fitzgerald. Using methods of qualitative research, it then considers the texts of in-depth interviews conducted with men, most of whom are theologians or spiritual leaders with a deep Catholic faith, and all of whom are openly, self-affirmingly gay. Finally, it employs Ricoeur’s hermeneutical theory to engage in a creative theological conversation between the traditional mystical stages and themes and these men’s lives, as described in their interviews. This is a unique study that brings together ancient spirituality with contemporary lived religion. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of religious studies, theology, Christian mysticism and spirituality, and queer studies. It will be of particular interest to those teach spiritual direction and to all who seek new ways to engage with the spiritual lives of LGBTIQ+ people.

Book excerpt: An insidious evil has invaded the Church, luring unsuspecting Christians into a seriously compromised form of Christianity. What makes it more dangerous is that a number of highly respected Christian leaders have mainstreamed this deception into the lives of Christians who share our pews every week. Under the guise of achieving a higher spirituality, seemingly innocent practices derived from pagan and Eastern mysticism are encouraging Christians to empty their minds of rational thought and open them to the world of spirit. But as is chillingly clear, the spirits contacted may be neither higher nor benevolent. The stated purposes of the mystical practices are to achieve oneness with God by discovering "the god within you." The deliberate effect, however, is to undermine belief in the transcendent God by lowering him into oneness with creation. The ultimate goal behind this oneness takeover of Christian beliefs is to move Christian theology toward Eastern and Gnostic concepts, thus preparing it for the merger of all faiths into a single, worldwide religion. This study guide is a companion to Mystic Seduction: Awakening Christians to a Real and Present Danger. It is meant to be used for both group and individual study.

Book excerpt: Why is Jesus Christ perceived so differently by people who all call themselves Christians? And what do we know today about this charismatic first-century Jewish teacher who came to be viewed as God incarnate in the Christian tradition? Today, many people have close ties to Jesus Christ's person, life, and message - yet they have no connection with any Christian church. Jesus Christ: The Love and Wisdom of a First-Century Mystic takes both churched and un-churched readers on a journey into the core of Jesus' timeless teachings on love and wisdom. Of all the mystic pioneers of humanity, Jesus may well be one of the most daring and demanding, who opened up a revolutionary new path based on love in action, radical inner transformation, and an alternative social vision. "A fine, reverent, and bold exploration of Jesus' teachings for both churched and un-churched readers"- Brother David Steindl-Rast, OSB
