Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy is a gargoyle at Furness Abbey. He enjoys watching the monks go about their business, and at night, when the moon is up, he is able to fly with his many brothers. Then the abbey is destroyed by soldiers. Everything changes and Guy looks on folornly as his brothers are lost. Some are carted away or broken and others go into hiding. He becomes very sad and grumpy and won’t talk to anyone. This goes on for many years until a little shrew decides to cheer him up… She makes him laugh and then he finds he can fly again and makes new friends. The friends then decide to help him find his brothers. They fly from place to place, meeting different animals along the way. They finally find the remaining gargoyle safe and sound at the Abbey Mill Café. Guy the Gumpy Gargoyle is a fantasy picture story about friends and feelings that uses the traditions of storytelling to encourage sharing stories. The beautiful, full-colour illustrations provide a stimulus for discussion and will inspire kids to speak and listen. The journey the characters take is descriptive and enables children to join in and predict the text. By turns funny and sad, it will appeal to young readers aged 3-7, who will be able to relate to Guy’s feelings and emotions and empathise with them. Gill has been inspired by a variety of authors, including Alan Garner, C.J. Sansom and Barbara Erskine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Blitz, the morale of the British people was clandestinely monitored by Home Intelligence, a unit of the Ministry of Information that kept watch on the behaviour and opinions of the public and eavesdropped on their conversations. Drawing on a wide range of intelligence sources from every region of the United Kingdom, a small team of officials based at the Senate House of the University of London compiled secret reports on the state of popular morale as the Luftwaffe attacked Britain's major towns and cities between September 1940 and May 1941. Edited and introduced by two leading historians of the period, who tell the inside story of Home Intelligence and why it proved so controversial in Whitehall, the complete and unabridged sequence of reports provide us with a unique and extraordinary window into the mindset of the British during a momentous period in their history. Not only do they include in-depth reports on the effects of the bombing, including special reports on Coventry, Clydebank, Hull, Barrow-in-Furness, Plymouth, Merseyside and Portsmouth, but also insights into almost every aspect of everyday life in Britain as well as the response of the public to the shifting military fortunes of the war. Reading like the collective diary of a nation, the reports strip away the nostalgia that has grown up around the period, reminding us instead of the sufferings and sacrifices, the many frustrations and difficulties of daily life, the administrative bungling, the grumbling and petty jealousies, and the determination of the overwhelming majority to put up with it all for the sake of beating Hitler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raven's Hoard is the follow-up to The Secret of the Swan. Nate is a young archaeologist who finds himself embroiled in an exciting and, at times, terrifying adventure involving smugglers, Vikings and treasure hunters. He comes face to face with a real 18th century revenue man and his betrothed, Dolly. They become entangled in a race to find a sacred sword and are beset by all kinds of difficulties - not least of all being catapulted between different times. They witness great events, including a horrifying Viking battle, strange discoveries in a graveyard and the mysterious appearance of John Stell, a scribe from Furness Abbey. These adventures take young readers on a rollercoaster ride through time as they pit their strength and skills against their enemies both in the distant past and Nate's present. Furness Abbey is again revealed as a hub of spiritual energy and mystery, holding its secrets close. Nate experiences the loss of two important people in his life, but learns that the end is not always final. He is amazed when he meets them again, in different guises and situations. He soon learns that his adventure is closely connected with events in both his brother and his sister's lives and the story ends with a cliffhanger and the tantalising prospect of further adventures to come... Out of Time 2: Raven's Hoard is an fantasy adventure story for children aged 9-13 years old. Gill Jepson has been inspired by Alan Garner, Susan Cooper and Michael Morpurgo. Like her first two novels, Out of Time 2 is set in Furness, with the Abbey being used as a focal point, and will entertain and educate children with its historical context.
