Book excerpt: Deal Breaker: It’s my job to play the player, and prove that the hockey culture on campus is toxic. My position at the Gazette depends on it. But two problems stand in my way. The way my boss wants me to get the story goes against my morals. And I’m starting to believe the guy who goes by the name Cheddar—a loud, obnoxious guy who gives the people what they want—might be a cloak. The guy beneath the nickname, Rhys Taylor, might actually be quiet, shy and respectful. Unless, of course, he’s also playing me… Fake Out: I’ve always been the sidekick, the supporting cast. Until I go on a date with Scotia Storm’s hottest center—a guy I’ve been crazy about for months—and everything changes. Even though the two of us don’t seem to make sense and I have no idea what he sees in me, love somehow finds a way. Every touch, every kiss makes me feel important and special, like I could be the main character in his life. I begin to plan a future, until I overhear words that shatter my heart and make me question my leading role. Could everything I’ve ever believed in be nothing but fake? Hard Burn: He was my brother’s best friend – my teenage crush. Until one night—one beautiful mistake—changed it all. He took off to play college ball for Michigan, and my brother and I never set eyes on him again. Now, three years later, I’m in Houston for a romance writing conference. He’s at the same hotel for the MLB playoffs. That’s when our past catches up with us, and the real games begin. This time, I plan to fix past mistakes and rewrite our ending. All is well until he discovers a secret that sends my plot in a new direction, one where happily ever after just might not exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of cultural encounter in colonial North America often contrast traditional Indian coastal-dwellers and intrepid European seafarers. In Storm of the Sea, Matthew R. Bahar instead tells the forgotten history of Indian pirates hijacking European sailing ships on the rough waters of the north Atlantic and of an Indian navy pressing British seamen into its ranks. From their earliest encounters with Europeans in the sixteenth century to the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the Wabanaki Indians of northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes fought to enhance their relationship with the ocean and the colonists it brought to their shores. This native maritime world clashed with the relentless efforts of Europeans to supplant it with one more amenable to their imperial designs. The Wabanaki fortified their longstanding dominion over the region's land- and seascape by co-opting European sailing technology and regularly plundering the waves of European ships, sailors, and cargo. Their campaign of sea and shore brought wealth, honor, and power to their confederacy while alienating colonial neighbors and thwarting English and French imperialism through devastating attacks. Their seaborne raids developed both a punitive and extractive character; they served at once as violent and honorable retribution for the destructive pressures of colonialism in Indian country and as a strategic enterprise to secure valuable plunder. Ashore, Indian diplomats engaged in shrewd transatlantic negotiations with imperial officials of French Acadia and New England. Positioning Indians into the Age of Sail, Storm of the Sea offers an original perspective on Native American, imperial, and Atlantic history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the state of race relations in America 10 years after one of the worst natural disasters in American history, Hurricane Katrina, and looks at the socioeconomic consequences of decades of public and private practices brought to light by the storm in cities throughout the Gulf Coast as well as in America more broadly. More than a decade ago, Hurricane Katrina served to expose a well-engineered system of oppression, one which continues to privilege some groups and disadvantage others. In the wake of the natural disaster that hit New Orleans, it became clear that institutions such as residential segregation, mass incarceration and unemployment, police brutality, political disenfranchisement, racial profiling, gentrification, community occupation, discrimination, and a prison-to-school pipeline are expressly intended to work against people of color and individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Unfortunately, very little has improved in the lives of people living in majority-minority communities since Katrina. After the Storm uses Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of the natural disaster as a point of departure for understanding enduring racial divides in asset ownership, academic achievement, educational attainment, and mass incarceration in New Orleans and beyond. The book explores the many specific aspects of the widespread problem and considers how to move toward achieving a state where all can thrive. Readers will better appreciate the key roles of race, inequality, education, occupation, and militarization in understanding the failures in the responses to this disaster and grasp how institutionalized inequity continues to plague our nation.
