Book excerpt: In Savage Attack: Tribal Insurgency in India the authors ask whether there is anything particularly adivasi about the forms of resistance that have been labelled as adivasi movements. What does it mean to speak about adivasi as opposed to peasant resistance? Can one differentiate adivasi resistance from that of other lower castes such as the dalits? In this volume the authors move beyond stereotypes of tribal rebellion to argue that it is important to explore how and why particular forms of resistance are depicted as adivasi issues at particular points in time. Interpretations that have depicted adivasis as a united and highly politicised group of people have romanticised and demonized tribal society and history, thus denying the individuals and communities involved any real agency. Both the interpretations of the state and of left-wing supporters of tribal insurgencies have continued to ignore the complex realities of tribal life and the variety in the expressions of political activism that have resulted across the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent.

Book excerpt: Slayer In February, 1989, Los Angeles college coed Dondi Johnson was viciously knifed to death and set afire by James Angel. In March, 1991, in a New York City strip club, dancer Yvonne Hausley, 22, was hacked to death by Tony Perillo. In April, 1992, near California's famous Livermore labs, fortyish Barbara Muszalski died screaming under the blade of handyman "Robert" Gonzales. In all three cases, the alleged killer was the same person: fiendish, frenzied Benjamin Pedro Gonzales. Sicko A gangbanger and loan shark enforcer too violent for his gambler bosses, Gonzales had become a rootless drifter criss-crossing the U.S. on a rage-fueled killing spree. His signature technique was multiple stab wounds to his victims' faces, especially in the eyes. Profilers determined that his ultra-violent killings gave him a kind of sexual release. Savage Sparked by TV coverage, including a segment on "America's Most Wanted, " an intensive nationwide manhunt raced to find Gonzales before he killed again. Once caught, he threatened to turn the justice system upside-down by feigning madness to delay his trial. Yet none of his crazy-like-a-fox tricks could save him from drawing a life sentence in California's maximum security prison at Corcoran, where he occupies a cell opposite Charles Manson, and where his jailers call him "the most dangerous inmate." Includes 16 Pages Of Shocking Photos

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “wickedly satirical, mad, ferociously farcical [and] subversive” angsty Brit of secret diary fame careens into his thirties (Daily Mail). I expect that by tomorrow I will have embellished the story and given myself a heroic status I do not deserve . . . Right now the truth is harrowing enough for aging, impotent intellectual Adrian Mole: He’s soon to be divorced; he hasn’t a clue what to do with his semi-stardom as a celebrity chef; his parents have become swingers (with whom is too shocking to go into now); his epic novel is still unpublished; his ex-flame Pandora is running for political office; and his younger sister has rebelled in the most distressingly common ways. But there’s one upside: Adrian’s son has inherited his mother’s unblemished skin. Is it any wonder that at 34¾ Adrian is still punishingly self-aware and willfully deluded about what he’s endured and what he’s yet to achieve? Struggling somewhere between breakthrough and breakdown, he’s telling his diary everything. The result? Adrian’s fifth Book of Revelation—and it’s “quite possibly, a classic” (Daily Mirror).
