Book excerpt: Excerpt from Satire in the Early English Drama Though numerous references have been made to the satirical character of many of the plays of our Early English Drama before 1600, no work exists which shows in detail this informal dramatic satire. It is hoped that this dissertation will be useful with its instances of early informal satire taken from the miracles, moralities, and interludes of the period 1450 to 1600 in showing: (1) the place satire holds in the early drama - a place to become exceedingly prominent in the Elizabethan Drama, especially in the plays of Ben Jonson; (2) the relation of this satire to the subject-matter and the purpose of the plays; (3) the methods, tone, type, and the objects of attack of this satire; (4) a reflection of the manners or social traits of the period; (5) a comparison of this informal dramatic satire with the informal satire occurring in other literary forms of the period, and with the informal dramatic satire of Elizabethan times. The writer is indebted to the following excellent teachers: E. L. Beck, B. A. Eisenlohr. E. S. Ingraham, E. H. McNeal, W. S. Elden, A. H. Hodgman, and C. S. Duncan; and owes special acknowledgment to S. C. Derby, Professor of Latin, J. R. Taylor, Professor of English, and J. V. Denney, Dean of the College of Arts. Professor Denney has been exceedingly kind and has read the first and last drafts of my dissertation. Professor G. H. McKnight has been helpful in proposing a subject, in directing my efforts, and in giving encouragement - such as only those who have been in his classes can appreciate. Many thanks are due also to the Dean of Women of Ohio State University - Caroline M. Breyfogle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Anglistik / Amerikanistik), course: 18th Century Satire, language: English, abstract: In his great and exceptionally well-researched book Jonathan Swift. Political Writer, James Allen Downie writes that “true satire condemns society by reference to an ideal” and that “such is Swift’s satire” . This statement by Downie not only serves as a good beginning for defining satire but also hints at an important aspect that should not be forgotten in any analysis of Swift’s satirical works. Swift, as any satirist in fact, needed and used certain occasions and persons in his times to trigger his satirical writing and refer to another ideal . Because of his “fixation with politics and his temperamental inability to ignore public affairs” , his writings, and especially his pamphlets and satires, reflect prominent issues of his times. For a satirical writer who wants to expose human flaws it is, of course, essential to use examples that he expects his audience to know. It was therefore necessary that Swift in his satires referred to prominent persons or recent developments and issues of his days to make sure that his satirical messages were understood by the English and Irish readers of the early 18th century. For this reason it is important to have at least a fundamental knowledge about political, but also cultural, religious and economic aspects of England’s and Ireland’s histories in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the time in which Swift lived and by whose historical developments he was influenced. Historical knowledge about his times will certainly help to understand which contemporary problems and persons Swift thought worth satirizing and will also make it much clearer what Swift believed to be more general problems or flaws of humankind that he tried to expose using contemporary examples. Before I will point out historical references in two of Swift’s satirical works, Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift and A Modest Proposal, and show in which way historical knowledge can help to understand these satires, I want to take a look at some developments in England and Ireland in the late 17th and early 18th centuries that are essential to an understanding of Swift’s work.

Book excerpt: Through its exploration of the intersections between the culture of the wool broadcloth industry and the literature of the early modern period, this study contributes to the expanding field of material studies in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. The author argues that it is impossible to comprehend the development of emerging English nationalism during that time period, without considering the culture of the cloth industry. She shows that, reaching far beyond its status as a commodity of production and exchange, that industry was also a locus for organizing sentiments of national solidarity across social and economic divisions. Hentschell looks to textual productions-both imaginative and non-fiction works that often treat the cloth industry with mythic importance-to help explain how cloth came to be a catalyst for nationalism. Each chapter ties a particular mode, such as pastoral, prose romance, travel propaganda, satire, and drama, with a specific issue of the cloth industry, demonstrating the distinct work different literary genres contributed to what the author terms the 'culture of cloth'.
