From that reasons sand production must be monitored and kept within acceptable limits. Sand control problems in wells result from improper completion techniques or changes in reservoir properties. The idea is to provide support to the formation to prevent movement under stresses resulting from fluid flow from reservoir to well bore. That means that sand control often result with reduced well production. Control of sand production is achieved by: reducing drag forces (the cheapest and most effective method), mechanical sand bridging (screens, gravel packs) and increasing of formation strength (chemical consolidation). For open hole completions or with un-cemented slotted liners/screens sand failure will occur and must be predicted. Main problem is plugging. To combat well failures due to plugging and sand breakthrough Water-Packing or Shunt-Packing are used.

Book excerpt: Geomechanics of Sand Production and Control delivers a convenient resource for both academia and professionals to gain understanding and results surrounding sand production. Packed with rock mechanic fundamentals and field case studies, this reference offers theoretical knowledge, field and laboratory data, and operational methodologies. Gaining knowledge on better sand control production improves environmental impact, preventing corrosion of pipes, damage to surface production facilities, and disposal of produced sands, among other considerations. Sections are supported by field case studies, lab tests and modeling studies to explain the most environmentally supportive wellbore stability step-by-step methods. Authored by a very experienced professor, this reference helps engineers learn how to solve sand problems in various types of energy wells. Production engineers in oil and gas utilize sand production and sand control equipment in many completion methods, with a growing interest to expand these methods in wells for CO2 sequestration and geothermal areas, but knowledge on these methods is fragmented and lacks a bridge to support energy transition. This book provides the coverage needed to address this advancing field. Includes visual graphs derived from real-world fields and numerical models Covers transition methods into other energy assets, including CO2 sequestration and geothermal wells Provides solutions and examples with the inclusion of real field case studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides solutions to the fundamental issues associated with wells and reservoirs experiencing sanding problems, especially in deepwater environments. Sand Management is a massive challenge for the petroleum industry as it extends its exploration activities to new frontiers. Challenging ultra deepwater, High Pressure-High Temperature (HP-HT) and Arctic environments require engineers to drill more complex wells and manage more complex reservoirs, the majority of which are prone to massive sand production. Covering such fundamentals as how to maximize individual wells and field development performance, as well as how to minimize operational cost, non-productive time and guarantee flow assurance across the entire composite production system from reservoirs through the wellbore to the topside and flow lines, this handbook explains that the biggest challenge facing operators is the shortage of sand management personnel and helps companies realize the value of their assets. Reference for knowledge transfer and skills development in sand management for effective flow assurance Emphasis on HP-HT and deepwater environments Meets the needs of new and practising engineers alike as well as non-technical personnel supporting the offshore industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Surface Operations in Petroleum Production complements and amplifies Volume I which appeared in 1987 and covered several aspects of oilfield technology. This second volume presents a detailed theoretical and practical exposition of surface oilfield practices, including gas flow rate measurement, cementing, fracturing, acidizing, and gravel packing. In today's era of specialization, these operations are generally left to service companies, denying field engineers and company managers direct detailed knowledge of the specific surface and subsurface operations. This book presents a comprehensive analysis which may be used by field engineers to analyze technical problems, specify the required surface and subsurface operations, and closely supervise the service company's work and post-treatment operation of the well. Another subject which has great economic consequences in all oilfields is corrosion of equipment. The book presents a comprehensive analysis of the theory of corrosion in the oilfield and methods that have proved effective for the retardation, or elimination, of corrosion. Quality control of injection waters in then covered. Three more topics are addressed: the first is offshore technology which is presented with reference to onshore oilfield operations, making a lucid presentation for field engineers who have no practical knowledge of the subject. The second is pollution control - an area of oilfield management which has assumed widespread importance in recent years. The last topic covered is the subject of underground storage of gas and oil. Underground fuel storage and retrieval is an active area of oilfield production management that utilizes the technology presented in this entire treatise. Finally, the technology of testing petroleum products and sample experiments for junior and senior petroleum engineering students are presented. This two-volume comprehensive treatise on modern oilfield technology thus provides not only a complete reference for field managers, engineers, and technical consultants, but will also serve academic needs in advanced studies of petroleum production engineering.
