Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanctuaries of the Beer Years is the first book by emerging poet Max Enos. The collection consists of over sixty poems compiled in three sections: New England, Seoul, and a return to New England. Sanctuaries is about finding a safe environment among the chaos of modern life, while still living to the fullest. On a modest budget, and constantly moving around New England, and then to Seoul, South Korea, the reader can often relate to Enos’s themes, which include seeking at least one memory in permanence. The mood shifts from ennui to severe anxiety, reflectiveness, and elation. Poor habits and vacuous energies suck the reader in, but ultimately this book is about relationships to people, nature, time spent with friends, finding love, and maintaining vitality. Enos displays truly original poetic form, and offers numerous haunting lines of verse, eccentric as its author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harnessing a cultural sociological approach to explore transformations in key social spheres in post-1989 Poland, Chmielewska-Szlajfer illuminates shifts in religiosity, sympathy towards others, and civic activity in post-Communist Poland in the light of Western influence over elements of Polish life. Reshaping Poland’s Community after Communism focuses on three major cases, largely ignored in Polish scholarship: (1) a hugely popular, faux-baroque Catholic shrine, which illustrates new strategies adopted by the Polish Catholic Church to attract believers; (2) Woodstock Station, a widely known free charity music festival, demonstrating new practices of sympathy towards strangers; and (3) the emergence of national internet pro-voting campaigns and small-town watchdog websites, which uncover changes in practical uses of civic engagement. In exploring grass-roots, everyday negotiations of religiosity, charity, and civic engagement in contemporary Poland, Chmielewska-Szlajfer demonstrates how a country’s cultural changes can suggest wider, dramatic democratic transformation.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Jerusalem, Bethel is the most frequently cited sanctuary in the Hebrew Bible. The book offers a detailed analysis of Bethel and its sanctuary from archaeological and biblical evidence. It reconstructs the history of Bethel and by analysing the presence of pro- and anti-Bethel propaganda, it argues that the latter, with its own pro-Jerusalem/Judah bias, has resulted in an unfair denigration of Bethel as an idolatrous place of worship. The study suggests that Bethel was a legitimate Yahwistic shrine and continued to be so even after the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel to the Assyrians. Hence, Bethel in a real sense was the principal means of configuring Israelite identity.
