Book excerpt: Turn the dream into reality. If you dream of running away to sea in your own boat and sailing over the horizon to find a new life, then read on. Since moving aboard their yacht in 1984 the authors have cruised 25,000 relaxed, even hedonistic miles, and the lessons they have learned - both practical and psychological - are described within these pages. This book is not aimed at the would-be circumnavigator (although it has much to interest him) but at the weekend sailor for whom the annual fortnight's cruise is never long enough. It matters little whether you plan to escape for six months, a couple of years or forever. Nor does it matter if your destination is the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef: this book is still for you. June and Bill Raper are long-standing members of the (British) Cruising Association and have recently attained Commodore status of the (US) Seven Seas Cruising Association. In these pages they hope to pass on the benefit of their extensive experience to those already planning to sail away, as well as to many who are still at the dreaming stage.

Book excerpt: WE ALL DESERVE TO BE FREE Once upon a time, we were free to go wherever we chose. It wasn’t so long ago. The history of humanity, is a tale of constant motion. People are supposed to move about. We have imaginations which encourage us to dream about life in other places, bodies which are built to roam, and hands which can make an array of vehicles. A few of us even possess the “Wanderlust Gene”, which encourages us to take risks – to sail across unchartered oceans, and launch ourselves towards faraway planets. Some of us are forced to relocate. Lots of us choose to migrate. A few of us belong to nomadic communities. But if one thing is clear, it’s that mobility improves our societies. Emigrants send back billions in remittances – helping to reduce poverty, and inspiring their peers to upskill. Immigrants do the work that their hosts are unwilling or unable to perform. They sustain economies which have ageing populations. They establish industries, invent products, create jobs, increase wages, fuel growth, pay taxes, and enrich our cultures – enhancing our music, arts, sports, languages and cuisine. It's time to celebrate movement! It’s time to demand our freedom! It’s time for open borders! This book explains why – making the historical, scientific, economic, cultural, political and philosophical cases for free movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1967 and 2000, film production in Germany underwent a number of significant transformations, including the birth and death of New German Cinema as well as the emergence of a new transnational cinematic practice. In Projecting History, Nora M. Alter explores the relationship between German cinematic practice and the student protests in both East and West Germany against the backdrop of the U.S. war in Vietnam in the sixties, the outbreak of terrorism in West Germany in the seventies, West Germany's rise as a significant global power in the eighties, and German reunification in the nineties. Although a central tendency of New German Cinema in the 1970s was to reduce the nation's history to the product of individuals, the films addressed in Projecting History focus not on individual protagonists, but on complex socioeconomic structures. The films, by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Harun Farocki, Alexander Kluge, Ulrike Ottinger, Wim Wenders and others, address basic problems of German history, including its overall "peculiarity" within the European context, and, in particular, the specific ways in which the National Socialist legacy continues to haunt Germans. Nora M. Alter is Associate Professor of German, Film and Media Studies, and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Florida. A specialist in twentieth-century film, comparative literature, and cultural studies, Alter has been the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and a Howard Foundation Fellowship. She is also the author of Vietnam Protest Theatre: The Television War on Stage.
