Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pithy and readable challenge to the concept of human rights What are the origins of human rights? This question, rarely asked before the end of the Cold War, has in recent years become a major focus of historical and ideological strife. In this sequence of reflective and critical studies, Samuel Moyn engages with some of the leading interpreters of human rights, thinkers who have been creating a field from scratch without due reflection on the local and temporal contexts of the stories they are telling. Having staked out his owns claims about the postwar origins of human rights discourse in his acclaimed Last Utopia, Moyn, in this volume, takes issue with rival conceptions—including, especially, those that underlie justifications of humanitarian intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces BlastSim - a physics-based simulation platform to model and simulate suicide bombing events. The BlastSim software is designed to test, analyze, and validate the results of different explosive and injury model combinations under various conditions with different sets of parameters, such as explosive and crowd formation characteristics, blockage and human shielding effects, fragmentation and shrapnel, and the bomber's position in 2- and 3-dimensional environments. The suicide bombing event can also be re-created for forensic analysis. The number of fatalities and injured after a suicide bombing event can be predicted using this software with 91% accuracy. The assessment of an explosion's effect on a crowd can lead to better management of disasters, triage of patients, locating blast victims under the debris, development of protective gear, and safe distance recommendations to reduce casualties.

Book excerpt: This book is very special as it has precious gems. These gems are our moments together. Mom and I spent very special moments together after everyone left us after Dad passed away. Just the two of us were in the apartment, and we were discovering our lives together. My visits to India are short; by March, I return to Canada. I am not able to take the dry heat. Interestingly this year, many people from India and Delhi in special felt a different heat. The wrath of Corona. Many families were affected, and we soon became headlines with the Delta variant. I lost 8 family and friends. We were already grieving Dad’s loss, and now we had these sudden demises. Maa became clingy to her phone and kept a tab of who was with us and who wasn’t. She looked lost. My brother called us and motivated us so, did all the grandsons; Mom enjoys talking to her grandson. I persuaded Mom that we needed to go to Canada as my son was waiting. Mom loves India, her plants, her friends and then she showed me her diary where she wrote her poetry. Mom loves to write Bengali poems, and she loves to recite them. The books title is Maa Beti because people in the Orchid petal colony, Gurgaon, call us by that name. This was first coined when we took our first Covid jab. Incidentally, ninety percent of the people in Gurgaon have taken the jab.

It incorporates global lessons learned from first responders, emergency medicine providers, surgeons, intensivists, and military specialists with deep experience in handling blast injuries from point of injury through rehabilitation. The book begins with background and introductory information on blast physics, explosion types, frequency, and perspectives from the military. This is followed by a section on prehospital management focusing on medical and trauma responses, triage, psychological consequences, and operational considerations. It then examines the roles of the emergency department and ICU with chapters on planning and training, surge capacity, resilience, management of common injury types, contamination, and ventilator strategies. The next section covers surgical treatment of a variety of blast injuries such as thoracoabdominal, extremity and vascular, and orthopedic injuries. The book then discusses medical treatment of various injury patterns including lung, abdominal, extremity, and traumatic brain injury. The final section of the book covers post-hospital considerations such as rehabilitation, mental health, and community resilience. Throughout, case studies of recent incidents provide real-life examples of operational and medical management.
