Book excerpt: The Directors for a planet in another galaxy of our universe are concerned that Earth is destroying itself. They decide to send someone to educate Earthlings on how to preserve their environment, stop fighting each other and start loving each other. Young, impulsive YZ offers to go. The first Earth creature he meets happens to be a dog. Being pure energy, YZ enters the dog's body expecting to guide it from within, but Stormcloud, head of the Directors, chastises him for entering a dog rather than a human. Worse yet, YZ must remain in the body until it dies. Though the dog gets involved in situations where YZ can steer him in helping people, YZ feels like a failure. After Rex, the dog, dies, YZ has to keep trying to educate Earth creatures. He encounters a strong young man who turns out to be a bully, a girl who is instrumental in exposing a manufacturer who is polluting a stream, a Hispanic migrant, a Black man in search of a job, a Jewish boy and his friend. a Muslim boy, and finally an old man out to save the forest he loves from destruction. At last, YZ gets permission to return to his own planet. There he informs the Directors that Earth has enough good people to save it themselves. His next problem is to find a new purpose for his own life. His surprising choice should delight readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Important question is this: Will you step up to the plate?Tens of millions of Americans do not believe in global warming or deny that climate change is being driven by human activity. Others accept the consensus from the vast majority of scientists in the international community that anthropogenic climate change is real; however, most do not fully understand it. this lack of agreement and understanding is also true for the majority of elected officials and legislators who are expected to make wise decisions. As a result, virtually nothing constructive has been done in the past forty years to effectively mitigate the consequences of our lifestyles, habits, and addictions in order to slow global warming trends. Americans continue to demand more stuff: gas guzzling SUVs and trucks; planes; meat, poultry, and fish; milk and cheese; genetically modified crops and al of the pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that accompany them; hardwood, sand for manufacturing concrete, coal powered plants, hydrofracking, and oil drilling. All of this stuff is necessary to sustain the neoliberal myth of infinite progress that fuels booming and emerging economies. What is not being asked is: what are the consequences of the choice I make? Shall I purchases water in a glass or plastic bottle? A hamburger or veggie burger? Will I make an effort to buy only organic produce or doesn't it matter? The outcome is that, during just the past two years, the increase in global warming has included some of the worst climate events and news in recorded history. We can reasonably expect Category 4 and 5 hurricanes annually. There is no evidence that wildfires across the American West and Northwest will abate. Prolonged droughts will persist. Extreme storms, floods, and hotter weather, which now threaten global food security, are also creating a new norm. These environmental trends and more should force us to concede that humanity is on course to exceed its capacity to sustain a quality life throughout much of the world, including half of the United States.Yet, despite the lack of action in the US, there are nations and major cities around the world taking climate change seriously. Visionaries and scientists are creating unique and wonderful innovations in renewable energy to challenge America's hubris, denial, and complacency. Rather than descending into apathy, withdrawing into isolation and being unwilling to face these problems, this book intends to provide a deep and detailed strategy for how we can individually and collectively make a difference. And the foremost effort each of us can begin at this very moment is to adopt a healthy, plant-based diet. Not only is it affordable, but a vegan lifestyle will also strengthen our physical and mental health to face the challenges ahead. It is the single most important thing each of us can do to save the planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author and illustrator duo who created the award-winning I Have the Right to Be a Child comes this beautifully illustrated picture book about a child’s right to advocate for the environment they live in. All children have the right to learn about the world, to celebrate the water, air and sunshine, and to be curious about the animals and plants that live on our planet. All children also have the right to learn about endangered species, to be concerned about plastic in the ocean, and to understand what a changing climate means for our Earth. Scientists tell us that every living thing is connected. When we cut down forests, we destroy animal habitats. When we throw plastic in the garbage, it never really goes away. When we spray pesticides on our fruit and vegetables, we poison the earth, animals and ourselves. What can children do to help? All children can draw posters of endangered animals to raise awareness. All children can send a letter to the leader of their country, signed by every member of their family. All children can protest along with their parents. Children have the right to do all these things as proclaimed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. All children have the right to try to help our Earth, in whatever ways they can. Told from the perspective of a child, this colorful and vibrant book explores what it means to be a child who dreams of a beautiful future for their planet.
