Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia, Poland and the Ukraine As it is being asserted in E n g l i s h circles, that Rus sia is not so black as she is painted, and that Russia is going to turn a new leaf, and as Russian Liberals and even a large number of Russian revolutionists are joining loudly in this chorus of praises of the Russian conver sion, it is the duty of such Europeans as wish, in this question, to form their judgment in accordance with the state of things, not of to examine with the utmost caution what has been the attitude of the Russian Liberals, and of the other coming men in Russia, with regard to this Ukrainian question, and how the latter has been progressing. May we expect democracy and freedom for the Ukra ine At the present moment this question is a far more important one to put to the conscience of the con verted Russian nation than that of the democracy and freedom of Poland and Finland, however important these questions may also be. for it is going to cost a great deal more of moral conviction on the part of the Great Russians to do justice to the Ukraine, than to do justice to Poland and Finland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive account of Erdoğan’s Turkey – showing how its troubling transformation may be short-lived Since coming to power in 2002 Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has overseen a radical transformation of Turkey. Once a pillar of the Western alliance, the country has embarked on a militaristic foreign policy, intervening in regional flashpoints from Nagorno-Karabakh to Libya. And its democracy, sustained by the aspiration to join the European Union, has given way to one-man rule. Dimitar Bechev traces the political trajectory of Erdoğan’s populist regime, from the era of reform and prosperity in the 2000s to the effects of the war in neighboring Syria. In a tale of missed opportunities, Bechev explores how Turkey parted ways with the United States and Europe, embraced Putin’s Russia and other revisionist powers, and replaced a frail democratic regime with an authoritarian one. Despite this, he argues that Turkey’s democratic instincts are resilient, its economic ties to Europe are as strong as ever, and Erdoğan will fail to achieve a fully autocratic regime.

Book excerpt: This book contains an overview of many publications by employees of the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw in the field of Eastern studies. We have selected texts on the recent history of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and communist rule, as well as contemporary Russia and Polish-Russian relations. By making these available to English-speaking readers, on the one hand, we want to present a small part, due to limited space, of the Eastern studies conducted by the Institute and, on the other, pay tribute to their distinguished representative, Richard Pipes. In 2019, according to the last will of this historian, scholar and sovietologist, who died on 18 May 2018, the Institute received his book collection of over three and a half thousand items, mainly concerning Russia and the Soviet Union. These are works of high scientific rank that the scholar collected for over half a century. Acquiring the book collection was the first step towards establishing the Professor Richard Pipes Laboratory. This was possible thanks to funding obtained by the Institute at the end of 2019 from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as part of the Dialogue programme.
