Book excerpt: Illuminated manuscripts collected by successive kings and queens of England form the heart of a unique and visually stunning collection held by the British Library. A key figure in the formation of this collection was King Edward IV (1461–83), who commissioned a number of luxury manuscripts decorated with his arms. Subsequent monarchs added to this library, which was given to the nation by George II in 1757. Over 150 examples from this exceptional collection are presented in this catalog, which accompanies a major British Library exhibition of the same name. These manuscripts contain paintings produced by some of the finest artists of the Middle Ages. Highlights include the Book of Hours, made for Henry VIII's great grandmother, Margaret Beauch& Henry VIII's Psalter, commissioned and annotated by the king himself; maps of an itinerary from London to Apulia and to the Holy Land; and the Shrewsbury book, presented to Margaret of Anjou on her marriage to Henry VI in 1445. The catalog features full-page illustrations from each manuscript included in the exhibition, as well as three illustrated essays which explore the wider history and context of this unique collection. Written by the curators of the exhibition, along with contributions from several experts in the field, Royal Manuscripts will be a much-heralded event for scholars and collectors seeking to better understand the lives and aspirations of those for whom these stunning artifacts were made.

Book excerpt: How important a part did books play in the lives of successive English monarchs and their families? Besides Alfred the Great, Edward IV, Henry VIII, and George III, which kings cared for books? This well-illustrated volume presents a fresh and wide-ranging review of the material and documentary evidence for royal interest in handwritten and printed books. Leading experts offer new perspectives on the part of England's monarchs in the circulation and preservation of texts from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. Some essays consider individual books or monarchs. Others take a wider view of several centuries of evidence. At the heart of the volume is the remarkable array of royal books held by the British Library, including the Old Royal Library presented to the nation by George II and the King's Library presented by George IV. Contributors: Richard Gameson, Michael Wood, James Carley, Nicholas Vincent, Joanna Fronska, Catherine Reynolds, Scot McKendrick, Kathleen Doyle, John Goldfinch, and Jane Roberts.

Book excerpt: A celebration of the visual contributions of the bestiary--one of the most popular types of illuminated books during the Middle Ages--and an exploration of its lasting legacy. Brimming with lively animals both real and fantastic, the bestiary was one of the great illuminated manuscript traditions of the Middle Ages. Encompassing imaginary creatures such as the unicorn, siren, and griffin; exotic beasts including the tiger, elephant, and ape; as well as animals native to Europe like the beaver, dog, and hedgehog, the bestiary is a vibrant testimony to the medieval understanding of animals and their role in the world. So iconic were the stories and images of the bestiary that its beasts essentially escaped from the pages, appearing in a wide variety of manuscripts and other objects, including tapestries, ivories, metalwork, and sculpture. With over 270 color illustrations and contributions by twenty-five leading scholars, this gorgeous volume explores the bestiary and its widespread influence on medieval art and culture as well as on modern and contemporary artists like Pablo Picasso and Damien Hirst. Published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center May 14 to August 18, 2019.

Book excerpt: The Royal manuscripts collection, together with a large collection of about 9,000 printed books donated by George II in 1757, are often referred to as the 'Old Royal library'. The collection contains nearly 2000 manuscripts including around 1200 illuminated or decorated volumes. The royal donation was housed in the newly founded British Museum and now is held at the British Library. The collection itself was assembled by English sovereigns from Edward IV to Charles II. It includes works acquired for Henry VIII from religious libraries by John Leland, the Lumley Library from the time of James I, and the Theyer collection acquired by Charles II. Prior to the donation to the British Museum, the Royal Manuscripts were housed after 1707 with the Cotton collection, but were not seriously damaged in the Asburnham House fire of 1731. 114 literary works fom the Royal Manuscripts have been selected, including verses dedicated to English kings and queens from Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, to Charles I, a verse narrative on the gunpowder plot, William of Malmesbury's Gesta Regum, Erasmus's "A Certain Treatise cauled the institution of a christian prince or ruler", Ben Jonson's "The Twelvth Nights Reuells", Transcripts of letters connected with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, Transcripts of works and letters of Sir Thomas More, the "Vision of Piers the Ploughman" and works of the Classics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to attempt a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary analysis of the manuscript cultures implementing the pothi manuscript form (a loosely bound stack of oblong folios). It is the indigenous form by which manuscripts have been crafted in South Asia and the cultural areas most influenced by it, that is to say Central and South East Asia. The volume focuses particularly on the colophons featured in such manuscripts presenting a series of essays enabling the reader to engage in a historical and comparative investigation of the links connecting the several manuscript cultures examined here. Colophons as paratexts are situated at the intersection between texts and the artefacts that contain them and offer a unique vantage point to attain global appreciation of their manuscript cultures and literary traditions. Colophons are also the product of scribal activities that have moved across regions and epochs alongside the pothi form, providing a common thread binding together the many millions of pothis still today found in libraries in Asia and the world over. These contributions provide a systematic approach to the internal structure of colophons, i.e. their ‘syntax’, and facilitate a vital, comparative approach.
