Book excerpt: Frances Hodgson Burnett worked on these two books simultaneously: The Shuttle, a longer and more complicated book; and The Making of a Marchioness, which she wrote in a few weeks and published to good reviews. it is about the rejuvenating effects of Americans and American money on a somewhat decadent English aristocracy. The Making of a Marchioness (1901) It was originally published in two parts: the first tells the fairy tale-like story of how our heroine, Emily Fox-Seton, became the Marchioness of Walderhurst. The second, originally titled The Methods of Lady Walderhurst, is a down-to-earth portrayal of the realities of Victorian marriage, with a bit of a Victorian sensation vibe to it. The Shuttle (1907) It was begun in 1900 but frequently abandoned while its author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, wrote several other books, including, most famously, The Making of a Marchioness. The Shuttle is about American heiresses marrying English aristocrats; by extension it is about the effect of American energy and dynamism rejuvenating a somewhat decadent English aristocracy: Rosalie Vanderpoel, the daughter of an American multimillionaire marries an impoverished English baronet and goes to live in England. She all but loses contact with her family in America. Years later her younger sister Bettina, beautiful, intelligent and extremely rich, goes to England to find what has happened to her sister. She finds Rosalie shabby and dispirited, cowed by her husband's ill treatment. Bettina sets about to rectify matters... Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849 – 1924) was an English-American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular Little Lord Fauntleroy , A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden.

Snowbound in a shoddy convenience store with the least hospitable storekeeper in the state of Wyoming, two other stranded travelers, four kids forgotten by Santa – oh, yes, and each other. Because there was that thing that happened last summer. A mistake. They both thought that… though for different reasons. And agreeing it was a mistake didn’t make it any more comfortable to run into each other at the ranch of their mutual friends, the Curricks of the Slash-C Ranch. Especially when those same friends suggest, nudge, and push them into traveling East together to join their respective families for Christmas by spending eighteen hours in a car together. Except they never made it out of Wyoming, thanks to an early-arriving blizzard. And now their choice is to have one of the least festive Christmases on record or work with what they have and each other to make this a real Christmas for those kids … and maybe discover what Santa has in mind for them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth century, literature meant learned writings; by the twentieth century, literature had come to be identified with imaginative, aesthetically significant works, and academic literary studies had developed special protocols for interpreting and valuing literary texts. Literature in the Making examines what happened in between: how literature came to be more precisely specified and valued; how it was organized into genres, canons, and national traditions; and how it became the basis for departments of modern languages and literatures in research universities. Modern literature, the version of literature familiar today, was an international invention, but it was forged when literary cultures, traditions, and publishing industries were mainly organized nationally. Literature in the Making examines modern literature's coalescence and institutionalization in the United States, considered as an instructive instance of a phenomenon that was going global. Since modern literature initially offered a way to formulate the value of legacy texts by authors such as Homer, Cervantes, and Shakespeare, however, the development of literature and literary culture in the U.S. was fundamentally transnational. Literature in the Making argues that Shakespeare studies, one of the richest tracts of nineteenth-century U.S. literary culture, was a key domain in which literature came to be valued both for fuelling modern projects and for safeguarding values and practices that modernity put at risk-a foundational paradox that continues to shape literary studies and literary culture. Bringing together the histories of literature's competing conceptualizations, its print infrastructure, its changing status in higher education, and its life in public culture during the long nineteenth century, Literature in the Making offers a robust account of how and why literature mattered then and matters now. By highlighting the lively collaboration between academics and non-academics that prevailed before the ascendancy of the research university starkly divided experts from amateurs, Literature in the Making also opens new possibilities for envisioning how academics might partner with the reading public.
