ROGUE OF NEW ORLEANS They called him “Julian the Terrible.” Handsome, well-born, and hot-blooded, Julian Devereux gambled, drank, seduced women, and fought duels beneath The Oaks. The one soft spot in his heart was for his beautiful young ward, Mercy O’Shea. Julian had rescued nine-year-old Mercy on that terrible, long-ago night when he was compelled to kill her father. Wracked by guilt, Julian sponsored Mercy’s education and saw to her every need—even though the spirited young miss swore to hate him forever. But now Mercy has blossomed into a passionate, headstrong young woman, and Julian must wonder if he can save her from himself. ROGUE’S MISTRESS At eighteen, Mercy O’Shea is ready to escape her relationship with her handsome but arrogant guardian, Julian Devereux. Deliberately slighting Julian, Mercy accepts a marriage proposal from a young man Julian deems unsuitable. Furious when Julian rejects her suitor, Mercy vows to defy him, and soon discovers the horrifying, fascinating truth—that her guardian actually wants her for himself, and is even willing to blackmail her into marriage! Pride and passion explode between the strong-willed lovers as Mercy becomes Julian’s unwilling bride. Convinced that Julian only desires her physically, Mercy is determined to hide the devastating attraction she feels toward her dark, sexy husband. Julian guards his own heart, unable to reveal to Mercy that he wants her not just as a mistress but as a cherished wife. Can their fragile relationship survive all the secrets of their tortured pasts and bring love and healing to their shattered hearts? A Reckless Rockwood, Constance plays matchmaker, but at what cost to her marriage? Experience taught Gideon Lethbridge, Earl of Chelmsford, women will sell themselves for money and social position. When a passionate interlude in a dark garden sets Gideon’s heart on fire, he’s furious to learn his lover is an American heiress who bought herself a title. Despite his anger at being hoodwinked by Viscountess Helstone, she’s haunted Gideon’s dreams for the past five years. Now he’s planning her seduction, and he intends to make Phoebe surrender to one wicked, sinful moment of pleasure after another. Five years ago, despair and a need for solace sent Phoebe, Viscountess Helstone, into the arms of a stranger for one fiery moment of indiscretion. Now penniless, Phoebe is the anonymous author of the Currer Chronicles mocking the Marlborough Set. When Phoebe comes face-to-face with the man she’s never forgotten, she's horrified to learn she’s ridiculed him mercilessly in her satirical serial. With Gideon determined to seduce her, Phoebe is desperate to keep her writing a secret while trying not to admit she’s been in love with Gideon for the past five years. Like most Reckless Rockwoods, the an dara sealladh is a part of who Constance Blakemore, Countess of Lyndham, is. Although her husband, Lucien, insists Constance must stop using her psychic abilities to meddle in the affairs of others. Despite knowing Lucien's feelings in the matter, she cannot abandon a friend in need. But helping a friend puts Constance’s marriage and happiness in jeopardy as well. By ignoring Lucien's request, Constance might lose the one thing that will destroy her, Lucien’s love. This book opens with an unintentional indiscretion some readers may find to be an objectionable trope. The incident is this one scene only and is available to read in the Look Inside sample. Book excerpt: The "rogue," a term that described criminals, prostitutes, vagrants, beggars, and the unemployed, dominated the pages of early modern popular crime literature. Rogue Sexuality resituates the rogue by focusing on how their menace—and their seductive appeal—emerged not only from their social marginality, but also from their supposedly excessive sexuality and prodigious sexual reproduction. Through discussions of both familiar and little-studied early modern works by William Shakespeare, John Milton, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, Thomas Dekker, Robert Greene, Thomas Harman, and the inventor of modern demography John Graunt, this volume posits the sexualized rogue as the avatar of a new category of "socio-sexual identity" and traces a surprising social transposition, in which socio-political elites are portrayed as appropriating the rogue's sexual vitality and performative charisma to navigate moments of crisis. By tracking the movement of rogue sexuality from a criminal to a normative discursive register, this book challenges the distinctions that literary critics and historians tend to draw between orderly and disorderly sexuality. With its focus on reproduction, rogue sexuality also provides a new framework for what Michel Foucault called "biopolitics," the state's focus on exercising power over life. In legal, administrative, and scientific documents, this book shows that early modern writers grappled with popular pamphlets' rendering of the alleged threat of rogue reproduction. Rogue Sexuality thus offers a new approach to the political history of early modern England as a population—as a people whose aggregate sexual life and reproduction were a key part of its political imagination.
