Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, fighters from abroad have journeyed in ever-greater numbers to conflict zones in the Muslim world to defend Islam from-in their view-infidels and apostates. The phenomenon recently reached its apogee in Syria, where the foreign fighter population quickly became larger and more diverse than in any previous conflict. In Road Warriors, Daniel Byman provides a sweeping history of the jihadist foreign fighter movement. He begins by chronicling the movement's birth in Afghanistan, its growing pains in Bosnia and Chechnya, and its emergence as a major source of terrorism in the West in the 1990s, culminating in the 9/11 attacks. Since that bloody day, the foreign fighter movement has seen major ups and downs. It rode high after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, when the ultra-violent Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) attracted thousands of foreign fighters. AQI overreached, however, and suffered a crushing defeat. Demonstrating the resilience of the movement, however, AQI reemerged anew during the Syrian civil war as the Islamic State, attracting tens of thousands of fighters from around the world and spawning the bloody 2015 attacks in Paris among hundreds of other strikes. Although casualty rates are usually high, the survivors of Afghanistan, Syria, and other fields of jihad often became skilled professional warriors, going from one war to the next. Still others returned to their home countries, some to peaceful retirement but a deadly few to conduct terrorist attacks. Over time, both the United States and Europe have learned to adapt. Before 9/11, volunteers went to and fro to Afghanistan and other hotspots with little interference. Today, the United States and its allies have developed a global program to identify, arrest, and kill foreign fighters. Much remains to be done, however-jihadist ideas and networks are by now deeply embedded, even as groups such as Al Qaeda and the Islamic State rise and fall. And as Byman makes abundantly clear, the problem is not likely to go away any time soon.

Book excerpt: So far, he has seized $700,000 of American businessmen's assets. Every Mafia casino has been closed, and over a billion dollars of mob money has been confiscated. Sam Giancana and other Mafia bigwigs are extremely unhappy with Fidel. They are looking for a way to get even. So are the Americans, many of whom have been forced to flee to safety. Castro has already executed seven hundred Cuban citizens who dared to object to his murderous regime. There are no rights in Cuba other than those granted by Fidel Castro and his henchmen. Murder and mayhem are the order of the day. The burning question is, what can be done to stop Castro? On March 17th, President Eisenhower gives his permission for the C.I.A.'s Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell to develop a small, covert, anti-Castro operation. A thousand Cuban refugees will be recruited and trained as guerrilla fighters and saboteurs. When they're ready, they'll be infiltrated back into Cuba, where they'll begin a series of raids designed to upset, and eventually overthrow, the Castro regime. In the pages of The Castro Conspiracy we'll meet the U.S. Marine and Special Forces personnel who train those men. We'll visit them in their Central American mountain and jungle training camps. Then we'll watch as the 1960 Presidential Election puts a reluctant commander-in-chief in the White House, and see the entire, carefully orchestrated, covert operation fall apart. We'll attend dozens of secret meetings conducted by the CIA, FBI, and the CFR. At those meetings we'll finally discover why Operation Trinidad, a small, easily controlled and plausible incursion, a plan that was almost certain to succeed, was turned into the over-zealous, overly ambitious, and impossible to control fiasco that the Bay of Pigs Invasion eventually became. We'll meet the Kennedy family and the Castros, along with the deadly Mafia hitmen who are recruited to kill Castro. Washington insiders and Hollywood stars will be on display. Along the way we'll watch men who willingly risk their lives to achieve success, and women who willingly use their wiles to keep them from gaining that success. We'll get to know Jack Kennedy, a man who desperately wants the Cuban Invasion to succeed, and John F. Kennedy, a president who desperately can't afford to allow it to. And we'll be present when he cancels American air support the decision that spelled doom for the invasion and every Cuba Freedom Fighter. We'll spend three frightening days in the middle of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and eighteen frustrating months in its aftermath fighting and dying on the beaches running and hiding in the swamps sweating and suffering in the prisons. And wondering, always wondering, why the Americanos deserted us? We'll

Book excerpt: The human will to survive has sharpened to a knife edge after a century of postnuclear madness. In a lawless land where firepower and savagery rule, power lies with the barons and coldhearts who wield control through terror. Against all odds, a courageous few still fight for something better to live by—honor, decency and hope. Emerging relatively unscathed from the apocalyptic rebirth of North America, Canada hides a trove of Cold War–era secret government installations known as Diefenbunkers, filled with caches of weapons, wags and food. Ryan Cawdor and his companions agree to ride sec for a convoy headed west across the remnants of the old Trans-Canada Highway to retrieve the ultimate prize: four portable nuclear reactors. It's enough power to light up a ville for years, a bright beacon for a new tomorrow. But they have death on their tail, a baron and his sec men who will stop at nothing to claim the prize as their own.

Book excerpt: The Mad Max Effect provides an in-depth analysis of the Mad Max series, and how it began as an inventive concoction of a number of influences from a range of exploitation genres (including the biker movie, the revenge film, and the car chase cinema of the 1970s), to eventually inspiring a fresh cycle of international low budget 'road warrior' movies that appeared on home video in the 1980s. The Mad Max Effect is the first detailed academic study of the most famous and celebrated post-apocalypse film series, and examines how a humble Australian action movie came from the cultural margins of exploitation cinema to have a profound impact on the broader media landscape.
