Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the old West, around the turn of the century, a few ranchers daughtersa brazen fewdecided to shake up the establishment a little bit. They put on shocking divided skirts they had stitched up themselves or pants they had borrowed from fathers or brothers. They abandoned their ridiculous sidesaddles and dared to get on their horses astride. Then they happily rode off, leaving their lady-like images in the dust. They shot coyotes in Montana, rode the range in Wyoming, homesteaded in Nebraska, roped steers in Nevada, and branded mavericks in Colorado. A brave few of themwith a new taste of freedomkept at it, weathering their faces, hardening their bodies (and maybe their minds), shocking their neighbors, and, along the way, developing the same passion for the cowboy way of life that many men had.In her new book, Judy Buffington Sammons explores the lives of bona-fide women ranchers, many of whom have gone unrecognized in the annals of Colorado's sheep and cattle industries. Riding, Roping, and Roses spans a time period from the late 1870s to the present and includes women from many different parts of the state. Some of the women were fairly well knownalmost legendsand some were obscure. Against all odds, they make a success of their ranching endeavors, sometimes accomplishing feats that far exceeded anyones expectationsincluding their own.

No time to attend school now he planted the garden and hunted for meat for their table. All of the time seeing anything of value disappearing from the farm. Everything going to support the drinking habit his father and two older brothers had acquired. Theyd leave for town in the morning after eating what ever there was for breakfast and not be back until suppertime. He would lie in his bed in the evening and hear them argue about the problems the country was having at that time. When all he wanted was some help so they keep the farm as it had been. After cooking a meal of the rabbits he had hunted and what was left from the root cellar there was nothing left. He would have to hunt if he going to be able to cook another meal. In the morning he went down to find the only animal they had left, the old horse that he could have used to pack in a deer, gone. That was almost the last straw and the last straw was when he looked where he always left his rifle, and it too was gone.

Book excerpt: 'In what was clearly a labor of love, Townsend has produced a thoroughly entertaining book, which is important both as a biography and as a study of popular culture. Townsend interviewed over 200 people, including Wills himself, listened to every known recording and transcription of Wills's music, and seems to have examined just about every piece of written material that is available on the subject. It is doubtful that anyone will ever write a more complete or more accurate account of Wills and his music.' -- Bill C. Malone, Journal of American History

When her sister heads back to Marietta, Montana, to remodel their family homestead, Molly decides it’s finally time for a visit. Hooking up with a local bull rider is guaranteed entertainment...until her heart gets involved. Former professional bull rider Wes Granger has been chasing the championship dream since high school. After a fall that derails his career, he’s back home in Marietta to heal, work his family’s ranch and plot his next move. But when he’s saddled with a beauty with green eyes and a smart mouth as his ranch hand, he wonders if there’s more to life than chasing one more win. As Molly’s departure date looms, the thought of saying goodbye seems nearly impossible. Can two people with one foot out the door settle down for love?

Mulford (1883–1956) was a prolific author whose short stories and 28 novels were adapted to radio, feature film, television, and comic books, often deviating significantly from the original stories, especially in the character's traits. Many of his stories depicted Cassidy and other men of the Bar-20 ranch. But more than just writing a very popular series of Westerns, Mulford recreated an entire detailed and authentic world filled with characters drawn from his extensive library research.
