Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the American Marmots The eastern woodchucks live for the most part in pairs or family groups, the yellow - footed marmots in more or less scattered colonies, while the hoary marmots are more strongly gregarious. All the species live in burrows which they dig for themselves. In regions where rock piles, rock ledges, or stone walls occur the burrows are usually excavated underneath or among rocks, but natural openings in cliffs are often utilized for dens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the North American Ground Squirrels: With a Classification of the North American Sciuridae Ground squirrel burrows are often a serious menace to the safety of irrigation systems. Birdseye (1912, p. 13) tells of a serious washout caused by irrigation water escaping through a Columbian ground squirrel's burrow located in an orchard on the bench above. Lantz (1918, p 14) cites the destruction of 6 acres of alfalfa caused by the burrowing of a California ground squirrel into an irrigation embankment. An additional count against certain of the ground squirrels is based on the part they play in the dissemination of diseases often fatal to man, as is the case with the Columbian ground squirrel in the spread of spotted fever, he California, Oregon, Uinta, Colum bian, and Richardson's ground squirrels in the spread of bubonic plague, and the California ground squirrel and the Utah rock squirrel in the spread of tularemia. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller A Wall Street Journal Bestseller A New York Times Notable Book of 2020 A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Shortlisted for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year A New Statesman Book to Read From economist Anne Case and Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton, a groundbreaking account of how the flaws in capitalism are fatal for America's working class Deaths of despair from suicide, drug overdose, and alcoholism are rising dramatically in the United States, claiming hundreds of thousands of American lives. Anne Case and Angus Deaton explain the overwhelming surge in these deaths and shed light on the social and economic forces that are making life harder for the working class. As the college educated become healthier and wealthier, adults without a degree are literally dying from pain and despair. Case and Deaton tie the crisis to the weakening position of labor, the growing power of corporations, and a rapacious health-care sector that redistributes working-class wages into the pockets of the wealthy. This critically important book paints a troubling portrait of the American dream in decline, and provides solutions that can rein in capitalism's excesses and make it work for everyone.

Book excerpt: "The definitive book on camping in America. . . . A passionate, witty, and deeply engaging examination of why humans venture into the wild."--Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild From the Sierras to the Adirondacks and the Everglades, Dan White travels the nation to experience firsthand--and sometimes face first--how the American wilderness transformed from the devil's playground into a source of adventure, relaxation, and renewal. Whether he's camping nude in cougar country, being attacked by wildlife while "glamping," or crashing a girls-only adventure for urban teens, Dan White seeks to animate the evolution of outdoor recreation. In the process, he demonstrates how the likes of Emerson, Thoreau, Roosevelt, and Muir--along with visionaries such as Adirondack Murray, Horace Kephart, and Juliette Gordon Low--helped blaze a trail from Transcendentalism to Leave No Trace. Wide-ranging in research, enthusiasm, and geography, Under the Stars reveals a vast population of nature seekers, a country still in love with its wild places.

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE 2015 SHORTLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE 2016 Landmarks is Robert Macfarlane's joyous meditation on words, landscape and the relationship between the two. Words are grained into our landscapes, and landscapes are grained into our words. Landmarks is about the power of language to shape our sense of place. It is a field guide to the literature of nature, and a glossary containing thousands of remarkable words used in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales to describe land, nature and weather. Travelling from Cumbria to the Cairngorms, and exploring the landscapes of Roger Deakin, J. A. Baker, Nan Shepherd and others, Robert Macfarlane shows that language, well used, is a keen way of knowing landscape, and a vital means of coming to love it. Praise for Robert Macfarlane: 'He has a poet's eye and a prose style that will make many a novelist burn with envy' John Banville, Observer "I'll read anything Macfarlane writes" David Mitchell, Independent 'Every movement needs stars. In [Macfarlane] we surely have one, burning brighter with each book.' Telegraph '[Macfarlane] is a godfather of a cultural moment' Sunday Times
