Nicholas Moore argues that repetition in fact has a variety of functions in the letter, including an essential role in the believer's appropriation of the eternally valid work of Christ. Book excerpt: While many have recognized unusual patterns of repetition within the book of Hebrews, which seem to play a range of important functions within the text, the consistency of this patterning has not been fully appreciated and its function has been largely unexamined. This study investigates the location and function of what we have termed “link clusters” within Hebrews from the perspective of discourse analysis, to gain fresh insight into the language, structure, and genre of Hebrews; into the book’s relationship to the Old Testament; and into the book’s authorship and meaning. This work proposes, first, that Hebrews uses repetition to establish formal connections between words and phrases marked as significant by their location and context with respect to other similarly connected words and phrases; second, that link clusters serve to structure the book of Hebrews by uniting the text into a series of overlapping, concentric, and coherent units; and, third, that link clusters also serve an important topical function, clarifying and amplifying intended meaning as pairs of matching topic sentences that respectively introduce and conclude each section and subsection of the discourse by summarizing its content.

Book excerpt: Repetition has had a chequered and often negative reception in Christian history, especially in connection with ritual and liturgy, and the Letter to the Hebrews lies at the heart of this contested understanding. Nicholas Moore shows that repetition in Hebrews does not operate in uniform contrast to the once-for-all death of Christ but rather functions in a variety of ways, many of them constructive. The singularity of the Christ event is elucidated with reference to the once-yearly Day of Atonement to express all-surpassing theological sufficiency, and repetition can contrast or coexist with this unique event. In particular, Moore argues that the daily Levitical sacrifices foreshadow the Christian's continual access to and worship of God. This reappraisal of repetition in Hebrews lays foundations for renewed appreciation of repetition's importance for theological discourse and religious life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Hebrews is a fascinating extended sermon that has guided and nurtured the church through many significant controversies throughout its history not only as a solution to a problem but also as a problem that still seeks a solution. The counsel to hold fast onto the confession we received and to be willing to wander, moving toward that which we have yet to receive is as relevant today as it was nearly two-thousand years ago. Noted theologian D. Stephen Long explores this captivating book and its invitation into a robust world beyond the assumptions of today's scientific worldviews. Integrating doctrine, ethics, and politics, Hebrews aids the faithful of all generations to negotiate through troubled times.
