Book excerpt: With exceptionally clear analysis, James Fetzer dissects the philosophical issues underlying today’s most contentious moral debates. He examines unflinchingly the controversies where science, religion, and politics meet — intelligent design, creationism, evolution, abortion, stem-cell research, and human cloning — and offers a concept of morality based on respect of individual rights, not religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facts. Truth. Logic. Science. These are the basics of the world in which we live day-to-day in society, government, medicine, agriculture, and manufacturing. But while we have a 21st-century technology, we also have 1st-century superstitions, basically those superstitions found in religion. With a particular focus on Christianity and its predecessor, Judaism, Pfeiffer reflects on the facts of the Bible and Christian religions and his own thinking over a lifetime, from a Baptist upbringing through reading on both sides of the fence, to debating and discussing religious subjects with ministers, priests, rabbis and others of all religious persuasions. Reviewing various aspects of prayer, faith, miracles, morality, heaven and hell, he pokes fun at the contradictions and contrivances found in "the Book" and the rituals solemnly repeated long after they've lost any meaning. Biblical immoralities, prophecy, and blind faith come in for a sharp skewering as he roasts them in the hot gaze of reality. From Baptist to the Black List, author Boyd Pfeiffer risks being given the evil eye for casting doubt on some cherished beliefs. In this book he tackles the subject of religion from the standpoint of common sense and logic, including various interpretations of Biblical and religious meanings and content. Unfortunately, seen from this perspective, religion is as brilliant as a burnt out bulb. After a decades-long search for a credible reason to believe the teachings of Christianity, he turns over to the public the results of his research. The precepts taught in the Bible simply do not square with the exemplary stories the Bible itself presents; and the teachings, and the stories, don't even match up from one telling to another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us, at some level, know that we are being lied to. Some people internalize it and go on with their daily lives. Some ignore it completely. And still others latch onto fatuous opinion-makers whose daily bread depends on the very system they purport to uncover. Obviously none of this is satisfactory. What we need is to understand how the world works, how systems of power operate, what motivates its operation, and where it all originated. Much of this book is concerned with what are often called conspiracy theories a label which, it is increasingly understood, is used to try and misdirect all thinking about these very concerns in relation to our own lives. For when one knows how the system truly operates, the only rational response is revolution. This collection of Joseph Greens published work includes articles on political assassinations (The JFK 1o-Point Program, The Open Assassination of Fred Hampton), historical analysis (Critique of an Apologia for Santa Claus), film (The Beginning is the End of the Beginning: Regarding Watchmen), and philosophy (The Elusive Universe.) From government propaganda to popular culture assuming that distinction even exists anymore every subject is treated in respect to its epistemological implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science aims at the discovery of general principles of special kinds that are applicable for the explanation and prediction of the phenomena of the world in the form of theories and laws. When the phenomena themselves happen to be general, the principlesinvolved assume the form of theories; and when they are p- ticular, they assume the form of general laws. Theories themselves are sets of laws and de nitions that apply to a common domain, which makes laws indispensable to science. Understanding science thus depends upon understanding the nature of theories and laws, the logical structure of explanations and predictions based upon them, and the principles of inference and decision that apply to theories and laws. Laws and theories can differ in their form as well as in their content. The laws of quantum mechanics are indeterministic (or probabilistic), for example, while those of classical mechanics are deterministic (or universal) instead. The history of science re ects an increasing role for probabilities as properties of the world but also as measures of evidential support and as degrees of subjective belief. Our purpose is to clarify and illuminate the place of probability in science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The received wisdom about the nature of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire is that Sultan Mehmed II reestablished the Patriarchate of Constantinople as both a political and a religious authority to govern the post-Byzantine Greek community. However, relations between the Church hierarchy and Turkish masters extend further back in history, and closer scrutiny of these relations reveals that the Church hierarchy in Anatolia had long experience dealing with Turkish emirs by focusing on economic arrangements. Decried as scandalous, these arrangements became the modus vivendi for bishops in the Turkish emirates. Primarily concerned with the economic arrangements between the Ottoman state and the institution of the Greek Orthodox Church from the mid-fifteenth to the sixteenth century, Render Unto the Sultan argues that the Ottoman state considered the Greek Orthodox ecclesiastical hierarchy primarily as tax farmers (mültezim) for cash income derived from the church's widespread holdings. The Ottoman state granted individuals the right to take their positions as hierarchs in return for yearly payments to the state. Relying on members of the Greek economic elite (archons) to purchase the ecclesiastical tax farm (iltizam), hierarchical positions became subject to the same forces of competition that other Ottoman administrative offices faced. This led to colorful episodes and multiple challenges to ecclesiastical authority throughout Ottoman lands. Tom Papademetriou demonstrates that minority communities and institutions in the Ottoman Empire, up to now, have been considered either from within the community, or from outside, from the Ottoman perspective. This new approach allows us to consider internal Greek Orthodox communal concerns, but from within the larger Ottoman social and economic context. Render Unto the Sultan challenges the long established concept of the 'Millet System', the historical model in which the religious leader served both a civil as well as a religious authority. From the Ottoman state's perspective, the hierarchy was there to serve the religious and economic function rather than the political one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Church Door illuminates the relevance and importance of the church in today's society. Through personal experiences as both a university professor of literature and an ordained minister, Simonson shows us that the church serves those both within and outside its doors. The church door presents a metaphor for the paradoxes of life: entrance/exit, outside/inside, secular/sacred, closed in tradition/opened in Christ. Simonson explores these with informal style and anecdotes threaded with ruminations. Allusions span literary as well as theological and biblical references.
