Book excerpt: SOMETHING IS MISSING! Marriages are ending in divorce, fathers are walking out on their children and home is no longer the heaven it was intended to be. We have lost the true meaning of what love is because love was meant to be an act of worship but instead some of us are now victims of love. We have become a slave to the very thing that was meant to set us free. Scientist calls it emotions, philosophers call it affection and the theologians call it a virtue but the church said no, it is God. But what exactly is love?

Book excerpt: She only went to that party to protect a friend. 16-year-old Hannah longs to be bold enough to break the rules, but her fear of rocking the boat gets in the way. That's why she turns down a date with Brad, the guy she secretly likes but her friends have labeled as a loser, to keep her promise to watch Sierra's back at a party. But that decision changes her life forever, as Hannah is the one whose drink is drugged and who wakes up the next morning with no memory of what happened the night before. She's been date raped, and she doesn't want anyone to know. Not her parents, not her goody-two-shoes best friend Molly, and definitely not Brad. But keeping quiet leaves Hannah stuck in depression, fear, and self-blame, creates an ever-widening rift between her and Molly, and reinforces the lie that she is a hypocrite who gets drunk and sleeps around. The only way out is an act of courage she isn't sure she is capable of. When Hannah decides to reinvent herself into someone unafraid to speak her truth -- or to date Brad no matter what anyone thinks-- friends and enemies alike pressure her to go back to being quiet, while her own fear and pain keep getting in her way. But if she doesn't silence the frightened voice in her head and stand up for herself and other survivors, there's no way she'll ever be able to reclaim her happiness. And she's not the only one who could get hurt if she lets her rapist win. NOTE: Since Reinventing Hannah (#ReinventingHannah) is about the journey of a 16-year-old rape survivor, it may be difficult or painful for you to read if you are a real-life survivor. However, many such readers find it empowering, even though they may also need to take lots of breaks. Read it the way that's best for you, and don't forget you can always call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673 if you need to talk after reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past thirty years the American religious landscape has undergone a dramatic change. More and more churches meet in converted warehouses, many have ministers who've never attended a seminary, and congregations are singing songs whose melodies might be heard in bars or nightclubs. Donald E. Miller's provocative examination of these "new paradigm churches"—sometimes called megachurches or postdenominational churches shows how they are reinventing the way Christianity is experienced in the United States today. Drawing on over five years of research and hundreds of interviews, Miller explores three of the movements that have created new paradigm churches: Calvary Chapel, Vineyard Christian Fellowship, and Hope Chapel. Together, these groups have over one thousand congregations and are growing rapidly, attracting large numbers of worshipers who have felt alienated from institutional religion. While attempting to reconnect with first-century Christianity, these churches meet in nonreligious structures and use the medium of contemporary twentieth-century America to spread their message through contemporary forms of worship, Christian rock music, and a variety of support and interest groups. In the first book to examine postdenominational churches in depth, Miller argues that these churches are involved in a second Reformation, one that challenges the bureaucracy and rigidity of mainstream Christianity. The religion of the new millennium, says Miller, will connect people to the sacred by reinventing traditional worship and redefining the institutional forms associated with denominational Christian churches. Nothing less than a transformation of religion in the United States may be taking place, and Miller convincingly demonstrates how "postmodern traditionalists" are at the forefront of this change.
