I therefore put together a small work, 'A Subaltern in the Royals, ' and had intended publishing it. But last winter one of the most renowned commanders of modern days, who has done more towards making the British Army what it ought to be than any one who has administered its affairs for many generations, suggested that I might give some useful professional information by publishing the whole of my experiences during the many years I had the honour to belong to the British Army.
